Chassis Systems - Why Not?

May I ask what action? Using mags or not w/6mmBR? Burris Signature Zee Rings? What height and size of scope objective? If I opt for the XLR, I want the scope as low as possible, but the XLR design forces higher scope heights. How does the gun perform for you?

Phil

Here is a recent thread about the performance. I'm happy so far.

Here was the thread thanking people here for helping me with component selection and the build specs.

I have since changed the Zee rings. I ended up going with Badger high rings to get a little more clearance. It is a Nightforce 12-42x56 on it.

ETA: I have the single shot version and have a follower for the action.

Very nice. I am likely to be following in your footsteps, using a Howa action. I love the bipod, but $450 made me flinch when I looked that up.

I shoot a lot of High Power Service Rifle. A lot. .. The accuracy international chassis I have are both set up so they feel pretty close to that. I shoot them better because they feel more like I am used to. The eliseo is even closer and it is great to shoot. I never shoot from a bench unless i am forced to. i shoot prone sling, or bipod rear bag. Getting behind a conventional stock feels a little awkward. In the same way that if you are used to that, the chassis is going to feel awkward a well. My best advice to you, me being a non BR, sling and tactical rifle shooter, is find a few rifles with different stocks and get behind them. Try them. Descriptions and reviews are speculative at best. You need to actually try them. See what works, for YOU. Before you spend money. The AI and eliseo are the only chassis I like. I tried them all, tried the conventional stocks, manners, Macmillan etc.. Before I found the AI to fit me. Yeah it cost more but I don't have to use it then try to sell it for a loss to buy something else. Just find a few rifles with different stocks, and see. I see a lot of people come into my friends shop and pick up a stock and throw it up standing there and say yeah this fits, then go sit at a bench or lay down prone and have to do weird stuff to make it fit... Don't be that guy. If you want to bench shoot, sit behind the stock bring all your stuff to the shop and try it like you will use it. Bipod and bag, fclass rest, sling and coat, etc... Then decide. Worth the effort in the end. You can't look at the $$$ when your building a custom rifle when it comes to the stock. That's your interface to all that expensive machining and sets the tone to how well you can operate that machine.

Yeah the price is a little tough to swallow, but it was a must have for me with this chassis. It fits it like a glove and is the smoothest bipod I've ever used. Mine came straight from XLR. I believe they do something to the mount to make it fit better.

Good luck

Another consideration - an Eliseo tube stock. He makes a model for the short cartridges (6BR, BRX, etc.) which 100% feed from the mags. I've had one and they work! Plus Gary is responsive to his customers needs. Hard to beat!

Appearance has always been a factor, and will likely continue to be so. I find a McM A3-5 or A5 with their molded-in marble color scheme to be much more attractive than any of the chassis systems I've seen. Same can be said for a Manners stock with a nice paint job. But that's unquestionably a personal preference, in the eyes of a 62yr old shooter. Younger riflemen may have no such prejudices; if so, sales of chassis systems may well take off in the coming years.

My first impression was that $200 is a pretty high price to pay for bedding a bbl'd action in a fully inletted McM or Manners stock - especially if it's been ordered with enlarged action screw holes suitable to fit the pillars that come with B-O DBM. I do my own bedding with Devcon, and charge less than half that price to do the same for a customer's rifle. But, when you're a 'name' rifle builder, you can charge whatever the market will bear...

I shot AR SR in XC HP matches for years, then finally had to give it up because of aging vision. Have since shot AR spacegun MRs with adjustable buttstocks, along with Eliseo R5 & RTS tubeguns. I fumbled around a lot with offset & cant in the adjustable buttstocks, trying to get comfortable with them, and finally just set them up to be as close as possible to the AR's A2 dimensions, using the LOP adjustment to lengthen LOP after completing offhand, and again for prone after sitting. Simple methods for simple minds...

I do think that the tubeguns (Eliseo & MAK) with a glued-in action are likely to have increased potential accuracy simply because of the increased rigidity the sleeve affords. And Gary offers a simplified tactical buttstock that's lighter than the fully adjustable model, which makes his price more competitive when compared to a McM or Manners. Whatever floats your boat, I say. I've shot my R5 & RTS enough to have full confidence in their accuracy, but still prefer one of the rifles I've built myself in a conventional stock, especially when shooting off rests.

As an alternative to a glued in action there is the option of a dedicated lightweight receiver from 7075T6 which is an integral part of the rifle,

This is the C.G Model 66 rifle, it has a 22,0mm three lug bolt, C.G Model 22 trigger and has a chassis that offers the ability to swap between disciplines very quickly. The LOP, offset etc is full adjustable, the cheek piece is indexable up and down plus can be moved back and forth and rotated around the main tube so you really can adjust this to your shape. This particular rifle is fitted with the F/TR bipod pickup , above is the optional TR accessory rail and below the optional front bag rider plate so you can shoot it as an F Open, F/TR, TR, MR or BR rifle with not much more than a hex key to make the changes.

Greg, right now there is nobody dealing with the C.G Model 59, M66 or M75 over your side.

I forgot to add, this particular rifle is fitted with a 26" 6mm heavy profile barrel still only weighs in at 5.75kgs excluding a ‘scope so there is plenty of room for even heavier/longer barrels and optics in all disciplines.

The weight would lead to a very flexible platform. Unfortunately, the price point exceeds what I'll spend on my hobbies.

Greg,

Do npt forget there is no action cost nor trigger to add to it. The chassis IS the receiver itsejf....

Very happy with my new 6br in an XLR.

ETA: I actually like a pistol grip better. I shoot "open handed" only pulling rearward with a few fingers to my shoulder and I do that better with pistol grip stocks. My first pistol grip was a KMW Sentinel and when shooting it open handed I shoot much better.
interesting stock and bipod. Really interested in that bipod is there a arca type connector for that?

I prefer F-class over pure BR, and all my precision rifles are chassis guns.

I don't like shooting out of 1-pc rests. I tried it. That's not shooting. It's dialing.

You revived an 8 yr old thread; however, that may be a LRA bipod. Just based on the age of the picture that one may not be made any more.
