Who would you nominate as greatest gunsmith?

Feris Pindel. I am a big believer in in the talent of Col Billy, he has built 3 rifles for me and they shoot great, Billy is a national champion benchrest shooter. But he shoots the cartridge Feris Pindel designed as well as most other benchrest record holders. I gotta go with Feris.

The best gunsmith that I ever knew, or hope to meet, was CP Donnelly, and his claim was that PO Ackley was the best gunsmith; repeating the comments of several above posters.
He built the first custom rifle for me many years ago. It was a .284 Winchester using his barrel on a SAKO 61 action. It was a great shooter.

We’re spoiled with the amount of quality gunsmiths who are putting out excellent work. Two of the three I’ve used for the last dozen builds are assets to the forum with their membership and input, those two being Zack with Old Dominion Custom rifles and Alex Wheeler with Wheeler Accuracy. I also like Jon Beanland a lot. I wish I had the ability to try many of the others listed here, I know there’s several really good ones . It’s always fun to do a new build with quality builder who gives a rip about the end product. The first guy who built my first custom was an education in everything you don’t want in your builder, live and learn. If you’re interested in a new build do your homework or suffer the consequences of missed deadlines, poor workmanship, no communication, lack of attention to detail and on and on. The good guys pay attention to what bullet/freebore you wanting to use, what dies will you use, what trigger and poundage, what barrel you’ll use for that caliber, a good coating application, will it feed, etc. Ever have a guy build something with the wrong freenbore or something that wouldn’t feed and never even checked it out? Getting it right requires some effort on your end too, the more you know what you the better they can help.

You have hit the nail on the head Bro.

OK, let's move for a while to another side of the pond.

The benchmark for a great gunsmith for me is not the fact that his rifles set records. It is the non-existence of unsatisfied customers.

Who do we have here (pls EU members help me out on this)?

we do have dolphin's Mik Maksimovic. I know people shoot his rifles with great results. I know however at least one person who was not impressed lately by his work broadly speaking.
we do have Varide Cigognani in Italy who is praised by franco-italian benchrest community. Varide even wrote his own autobiography, so fur sure "ego" is there.
we do have Andy Atzl of BixnAndy- he builds superb benchrest rifles.
we have Norbert Schwarze of NC RADO. In the past it was "THE" name for f-class rifles, however Mr Schwarze seems to be retired and passed the business over to his son. If the quality is still there, the feedback on this is mixed.

After that we have a dozen gunsmiths building rifles mostly for the PRS crowd like Reimer Johannsen.

There are pipe fitters and then there are gunsmiths. Gunwork has come to emulate Doctors, they specialize. Billy Stevens , while a fine benchrest gunsmith, would not be the fellow I would send my M1A to for match prep work. Need a world class Palma rifle, Clarence Hammond’s would probably pass.
Some mighty fine gun work as been done by the likes of Alan Warner ( many time Palma Team armorer). Clint Fowler ( in Va.) was very innovative n built some world class Garands n M1As.
So, I think when u talk about “The Best Gunsmith”, it depends on the purpose of the gun u want to build. Like many said, the really good ones are booked well in advance. Get on their list and don’t ask what they charge. None of ‘‘em are getting rich building rifles or stocks.

(WSMNUT) Zack Donovant ODCR Maidens, VA. Nobody does it better. Craftmanship - Quality - Customer Service - Price - Communications - Shipping. Best in the business. Proof is on the bench. Let him build your next one.
Not going into any details at all, but once again I've just witnessed this man go above and beyond any reasonable measure of being the "Stand-Up" Builder that we all would want to be doing business with. Never ceases to amaze me. ZACK IS THE MAN.

Don't have a name but I watched a video quite a while back about a colonial gunsmith making a rifle the old way. I believe it was called "The Gunsmith of Williamsburg".. The smith made everything used to make the rifle by hand. Even made the screws by hand. No power machinery was used . Was very interesting, especially the part where he cut lands in the barrel by hand.

Wallace Gusler comes to mind but I am just not sure,.

Edit: Found this link.... http://www.gunsandgunsmiths.com/the-gunsmith-of-williamsburg/
Funny you mention Williamsburg gunsmiths. I agree, they have the old ways down pat. I know one of those smiths, he does great work on the old guns, but brings any non-colonial period to me to work on.
At first I was kind of shocked. But he explained, he prefers to stay in his lane/specialty. Juat like I wouldn't be building a flintlock from scratch.

Gunsmith is a pretty broad term encompassing a lot of different skills on a vast amount of different firearms. An old fellow I know might fit the description but there are many others I'm sure that have fit the description as well. Less Brooks worked in the gun trade for more than fifty years and can make a flat spring for your single shot or time your revolver as well as stock a rifle from a block of wood, finish it, checker it, blue and engrave the rifle itself. He was a decent toolmaker and could open the choke on your shotgun with a reamer he made and hardened himself. The things he will take to the grave came from working on firearms of all types over a vast time span. The honorable trade of gunsmithing is probably one of the most daunting to master and the most underpaid professions there is. I salute them all.

There are probably tons of "above and beyond" gunsmiths all over our world. Based on my last builds, from my little corner of the world, I will stick with Zack from Old Dominion Custom Rifles. During my lifetime, (up to now) I have had 10 custom rifles built and I have yet to meet another gunsmith with the integrity and moral fiber that Zack displays. Are there other gunsmiths like Zack? Of course, there are. As I mentioned, in my little corner of the world.
