Who would you nominate as greatest gunsmith?

There are a lot of great smiths doing accuracy work. Dave Tooley, Larry Scott, Gordy, so many that it almost boggles the mind. My hat's off to all of them. They have made the shooting world a much better place and have made the shooting public expect more from a commercial offering. That has changed the industry for the better.

I recently had bolt work done on a long action Remington in which he bushed the pin and installed a Sako Extractor. 7mm mag
Bad mistake- Make a long story the Sako Extractor would not extract a loaded bullet and eject it from the gun consistently. Sent back several times even with the gun. End the end said he could not fix it because the way the lugs were made to the Remington action. Ended up having to buy a new bolt. Very frustrated because I did my research and it still bit me. So my experience with Greg is nice fella and he tried but this should of never happened. Live and learn. So to answer a question. Stay original and no I would not recommend Greg because of this experience.

Two posts since you joined yesterday and both bashing Greg Tannel. I take it you don't like Greg.

New member since yesterday. 2 posts. Both bashing Greg?!?! You shouldn't join a forum just to bash someone. I think there is more to this story.

I visited Buhmiller at his shop about forty years ago. In the mid-thirties he built a Bullpup and shot at Camp Perry. He did well enough that the Competition Committee met after the match and outlawed them. He made his own barrels as well. Not many gunsmiths built every type of rifle, and competed at a high level with them. He designed a 458 caliber cartridge using NORMA cylindrical Magnum brass, that Jack Lott based the 458 Lott on several years later. He also designed a 458 caliber rifle using the 416 Rigby case and hunted Elephants and Cape Buffalo successfully with them. IIRC, he also built the prototype, on a Remington M30 that Weatherby copied for the 460 in the late fifties.

Can anyone match his accomplishments and exploits?

My Late Fathers Hunting rifle has a Buhmiller barrel on it. 03' Sporterized in what else.... 30 '06.

Maybe you guys know these two. One has smithed his rifle for at least 2 Hall of Fame BR points.

Howdy !

Fred Sinclair. Did not only his own BR rifles, but BR, Hunter Bench and varmint rifles for others as well.

I believe he has held some small group world records ( under former NBRSA guidelines ), shooting his own stuff. Hall of Famer, from decades ago already.

Designed and fab'bed his own action, and was putting forward AR stuff well in advance of others.
Look at how many Sinclair reloading and other accuracy items are out there.

Fred has cast a large shadow, fer sher.
