Who would you nominate as greatest gunsmith?

William B Ruger, He walked into Springfield with a modified Savage he had turned into a Semi Auto (that was his application). . You can probably figure out the rest of the story..

John Moses Browning

That is a very hard question to answer. I can name a few that are amazing. It truly depends on what you want done. It does seem that most really specialize in what they like to do.

I am not a smith in any shape or form. I have spun up a few AI tubes that have won more than a few rifle competitions. Incase anyone is asking I am not advertising my services. Nor will I sell you a tube.

I am not a top class shooter by any means, I get my butt kicked regularly by Mr. James Mock at our bench rest matches.. Every now and again he will show me the errors of my way. I enjoy listing and learning from this man. Now for the question at hand I would like to shout out to my gunsmith Mr. Alton Britt at Dixie Precision Rifles. He has built all of my competition guns and although I can't do them justice yet they do shoot extremely well. You have to have a well built rifle as your base but in the end as Mr. Britt says its the Indian pulling the string and ability to read wind and conditions as I see Mr. Mock do all the time...

Thanks for the compliment, but I am not sure that I deserve that much praise. I have played this game for a long time and I still make the same stupid mistakes over and over. If this is Scott, you do indeed have a great rifle and all that you need to start winning is some trigger time. Where were you today?

As far as gunsmiths are concerned I was really asking about the accuracy gunsmiths of today.....BUT, that is not what I said originally. Thanks for the replies. James

Parker Otto Ackley.

Definitely one of the best ever. If you have access to a gunsmith/machinist that can chamber and thread a barrel accurately for your action you are a very lucky person. Finding a person to bed the action in a custom stock is again a lucky occurrence. My bedding and inletting skills are slowly improving and provide satisfaction when an action/rifle I have shoots small groups for me.

Ross Sherman, carbide buttons, mentored Shilen and Hart, made his own actions in the 60's (Superior) which won years 60-61 on east coast BR matches, and most of it on machines made at turn of century or before.

I am in the land of sand, in a shipyard in Saudi Arabia living the life.. 120 to 135deg

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!!

No matter who you think the best gunsmith is they all are part of a small group of folks who take extreme pride in their work and it seems like that group is getting smaller and smaller due to the fact laws are changing and they dont want to deal with that and they are getting old and want to slow down.

So in my eyes all you gunsmiths you folks are the best. You keep our sports competative, meat in the freezer and memories filling the mind.

Many many years ago I watched a weekly series about a rancher who walked tall and carried a dangerous winchester. The gunsmith on that program that occasionally smithed that ranchers lever action must have been a hell if a gunsmith because every time he threw that loop lever against the lower stock, it managed to hit every thing he pointed it at. Hell I think he deserves a vote !!! On a serious note, many gunsmiths that have been brought up in the last few pages are gentlemen that I have certainly heard of and have seen guns built by them. Too all of them, bravo. You've put a good many very fine firearms in the hands of those of us that love this game. Keep up the fine work.

I think this has to be categorized a bit but certainly from a design and innovation standpoint; nobody can stand with Browning! Some of his designs are over 100 years old and are still in use by the military today. My wife is a decendent of his. We have some of his tooling. What is amazing to me is that he was able to design what he did with what would definitely be considered "crude" tools by today's standards.
