Who carries a sideram when they go deer hunting? What is it? Ammo?

I never carried a sidearm while big game hunting in Arizona for decades. Things have changed a lot here. There are more and more close encounters with lions, wolves and black bears. Now we carry one when we are hunting, hiking or fishing anywhere but especially in the back country. If you’ve deer hunted southern Arizona much you’ve probably glassed up lines of people in camo, mostly armed, crossing into the country or drug trains. I quit hunting the southern units for Couses deer because it was getting to be a real issue where we were hunting, unit 36b mostly.

The majority of time we carry a Glock, either 17 or 19. My wife and children are familiar with them, easy to use, reliable and plenty lethal with the right ammo. I load my own.

When I lived in Alaska we always carried, mostly shotguns but big pistols at times too. I lived in the Bristol Bay area. Brown bears did too. You’d be foolish not to there.

Ahh. Now I know. Ha, I read the tile a few days ago and didn't notice anything. Looked laste evening and said sump'n aint right. All in fun.. I dont carry one but If I did it would be for personal defense.
Last night's response may or may not have been influenced by a lil Rye, you be the judge. Lol it was all in fun.

@nakneker, we went into a favorite hunting area last year looking for our usual critters deer, elk, and bear.
We were literally followed closely by 2 vehicles as we drove by camp after camp of homeless/ indigent people cars, trash and pot plants along the way to the very end of Forest service road. The natural spring in the back draw where we generally find good elk sign had a water line coming out of it. I'm thinking for some illegal grow.
The wife did unholster her pistol until we got out of the area.
Forest service did say they would investigate due to the illegal water usage.

Insane, seems like we hear or experience this non sense more and more. Good for the wife, don’t blame her!

I read this whole thread fairly quickly and chuckled more than a few times.
PA resident here, when archery hunting I have carried my SP101 2.25” 357mag for more years than the law has “legally allowed”. When deer hunting with a rifle I more often than not carry a super Blackhawk hunter 7.5 44mag. I have however not yet fired it at an animal.

As far as the what I carry and why goes. I’m sure most of us have heard the joke about the two Polocks, ( polish decent myself )
Lost in the woods one says to other to fire 3 shots in the air a the top of every hour to signal their location to the search party , at the top of the third hour Polock B asks Polock A for his bow as he is out of arrows.

I also carry matches, lighter , other fire staring items, real plain jane compass, emergency poncho , emergency food , a flashlight with a spare set of batteries ziplock bags ,plain white paper ink pen ,streamer, small first aid stuff , etc
I do carry concealed religiously in a daily atmosphere as well.
My family and friends all bust my balls about packing too much, I am however the guy that that has stuff when someone else says out loud that it would be nice if we had “x”.
One major life lesson I learned years ago in scouting “always be prepared, mentally aware and morally straight.”
Buddy of mine went on rafting/camp trip a few years ago. All smart guys and well turned out. Except no sharpening tools. He said by the third day they were destroying fish by basically tearing them apart with their remaining best knife.

I have 3 revolvers that accompany me into the woods. A 3" S&W M60, 38 special when fly fishing, a 32 H&R mag single six when bow hunting where coyotes might be, and a 2.75" S&W M69 where bigger animals roam. In the .38 I use 158g LSWHP, the .32 loaded with 100g Hornady XTP, and the M69 is loaded with a hot load 250g WFN 44 special, or 44mag load of same 250g WFN.

Never needed or carried a handgun my whole life while hunting until recently. Ran off a few bears and had a few run me off but that is about it. I do carry a 9 now but that is mostly for two legged critters. Over the years the woods have filled up with a lot of nuts and idiots. Every year I encounter one or two "hunters" carrying AR's with 20 round mags, tactical vests, and Rambo knives.

Yes, there is a sidearm on my belt every time I go into the woods, hunting, camping or whatever. Carried a Ruger Mark II .22LR for years till it was stolen, now I do with a Walther .22 mainly for snakes and chiggers. Damn, the chiggers around here are huge! ;) When working at deer camp before season it is a SA Ronin 1911 .45 ACP or a M&P 9mm, mainly for two legged varmints. (Prefer the 1911 even with the weight penalty.) During deer season it's a 6" SS Colt King Cobra with 158 gr JHP for hunting, finishing off game or fending off two legged idiot varmints. With subdivisions spring up all around our lease you never know when there may be trouble.

very accurate statement, picking a state or country for that matter certainly would be more helpful.
most Pa whitetail hunters just carry a spare beer to hold them over till they get back to camp, that is if they ever even leave camp.

aewsome pic lmao!

is there one for Spring Gobbler hunting
Smack um with a Silverado’;)

Here’s the actual story behind that bird. His beard is over 7 inches

That has to be the dumbest rule I ever heard of! You can carry a revolver but not a pistol? Makes no sense at all!
Like a belt and suspenders, with buttons not zippers, and a 250 square inch hat, blaze orange. To satisfy the "really wish I were Amish" PA Game commission rule writers.

On the second Tuesday of this week, in a full moon phase, while genuflecting to the west, you may take one hooved animal with any flintlock of 44 caliber or larger, open sights, and you may only use pee or whale blubber (ethically harvested by gentle squeezing) to lube your patch.

Welcome to a PA wet dream....

Since I had a run in with coyotes while bow hunting several years ago I started carrying my Single 9 in 22 WMR. This year I picked up a Marauder 22 cal PCP pistol. It was kind of wimpy, Only 13 fpe. Marginal even for squirrels. With appropriate mods it now shoots at 30 fpe. It's still fairly quiet so plinking grouse or squirrels from my treestand or ground blind should not alarm the deer. Haven't eaten either for many moons. Yum freaking yum.
