whitetails with a br

looking for some info on a hunting load for deer.Shooting a 6br,got a 1 in 12"twist barrel, using 75gr.v max for targets.Along with 31.50grs of IMR 3031.Just wanting to kill a deer with it.
Thanks, blinky

Several thoughts: Vmax, if it makes it into the chest, does awesome damage. I cull northern deer with a 55 gr Vmax in a Swift. Never had one go more than three hops. All careful chest shots or head hits. That said, hunting is not culling. You may want to look at a monolithic bullet from Barnes, etc, for better penetration/expansion, especially when the "right shot" is not perfect. The BR will do it, just need the right bullet.

The 85 grain Sierra Game King, pushed by a healthy dose of Varget, has worked very well for me on South Texas deer and pigs. All shots have been under 125 yards, so I can't speak to how this bullet performs at longer ranges.

The way I see it is that the 6BR is on par with the .243, which is a proven deer killer.

I have a 12 twist .244 and it is deadly on deer and antelope with the 85 gr Sierra HPBT. Try it you will like it. That 85 gr sierra is a "smackdown" bullet and ver y accurate, I shoot it in a 8.5 twist 6br and it works extremely well. You can go to 85 gr coventional bullet with a 12 twist---no problem.

I killed a slew of groundhogs and several deer with that bullet in a 243. I would recommend a neck or full broadside double lung. It will mess up a lot of meat.

If you want more controlled expansion, check the three nosler partition bullets to see if the 1:12 will stabilize them.

I killed several deer with the 95 grain in the 243 at redline velocities. You could get away with quartering shots with it. Hitting bone isn't going to blow it up.

Remember, it's all about shot placement. These guys are right, I've smacked more than a few with the 85 Sierra's.
9 in one weekend on a cull hunt. In some cases, the head comes completely off! Lol!

1st bullet for a 6mm is a Barnes TSX or TTSX. Shoot them through a shoulder or wherever you want. Total penetration with violent expansion, nothing better. The Sierra & Nosler bullets are good bullets but they aren't in the same league.

I can't really say for sure as I've never ran them thru a 12 twist, but if it will stabilize a cup & core bullet of the same weight ,you should be OK. That bullet isn't a lot longer than a comparable weight cup & core bullet.

That's the approximation that I used. The Barnes is 85 grains and is pretty pointy. I shoot a couple of different bullets with a similar weight in a 6 BR and they require a 10 twist. The Berger 87 VLD Hunting is a good example.

6 MM
87 gr Match Grade VLD Hunting .243 87 0.412 0.211 10 24524

The smart thing to do before plunking down for the Barnes would be to call them and verify that it would stabilize in a 12 twist at 6 BR velocities.

FWIW,

I have seen the 85 Sierra Game King at work many times and it does the trick just fine. I have used 105 A- Max 105 Bergers and 107 SMK's. Mine shoots the 107 best and I cull with them, head, neck and body. Just know your limit and the application.

The Barnes 85gr would NOT stabilize in my old 12 twist br. Its the length of the bullet NOT the weight. I got 12" groups at best at 150yds. Then for giggles I shortened some in the lathe to 62gr and got less than 1" groups at 150yds.

Like others have stated, go with the Sierra 85gr Gameking BTHP.

Or, try a 70gr Ballistic Tip, they have a much thicker jacket and will penetrate a lot deeper that a vmax or blitzking. Actually I think they are too hard for varmiting. Not nearly as explosive as bt or bk.

Yep. Approximately the same weight as I was saying required a 10 twist, BUT because they are solid copper which is less dense than the lead core of the Berger, would have to be longer and thus would most likely NOT stabilize in a 12.

The 12tw will shoot a 87gr Vmax, I would go with that. The 87gr Berger is for a 10tw. I just got a 15" 6BR 10tw for a Encore. I plan on shooting the 87 vmax and 87 VLD.

We are going to try out the 87vmax and 105 amax out this weekend on some Pa Doe. Dad had open heart about 2 months ago and has to shoot a light recoiling rifle. I have chose 2 of my 243's and going to set a shooting table up in a freshly cut corn field. I have a lead sled DFT to reduce almost all of the recoil. I am very interested to see how they perform at 150-400 yards. The 87vmax will be used for the closer ranges and then the amax will be for longer ranges. Dad is just upset he cant bring the 300 weatherby he carried all his life.

Might want to look at getting a break installed on the .243 your pop is going to be using, pretty cheap way to take out almost all of the recoil for him.

that 12 twist and a quality bullet will drop a WT without much effort. 75 grain NBT and varget!

Deer are not real tough animals to kill.
