Which way should I go??? 20, 22 or 6mm speed demon bolt action.

Hello all, I been a AS member for many years. Haven’t been on here in a few years. Not from lack of interest, but lack of time. I’m sure all of you all know that song and dance. Anyways, I’m wanting to build a heavy bolt action in a 20 or 22 call. Thinking more on the 22 cal because of better bullet options. 26”-28” Brux barrel and a Stiller TAC 30 action. Right now I’m thinking a 22-6.5x Lapua. I’m thinking this cartridge because my regular 6.5x47 Lapua is so freaking accurate in multiple powders and bullets. I’m also thinking a 22 Dasher. I’ve never went the BR route.

I’m a 6bra fan but I have bad itch for a 22gt at the moment. 22-250 speed but more efficient. I have a buddy with a 6gt that stupid accurate, I can’t imagine 22cal would be any different especially with bullets we have now.

All them choices are good I’ve had a 20 BR loved it I’ve had a 6 x 47 lapua and and loved it now I have a 22 Creedmoor but haven’t shot it yet just had it built. All depends on what kind of shooting you’re going to be doing. And we all know one caliber can’t do all imo .

22BR is a dandy. Wish I had played with one years ago. Not a real speed demon by my thoughts but has been exceptionally accurate with good speeds I run 36-55’s.
I did a LOT of reading and pondering on the 20 BR. By the looks I am several years behind others on it. I can’t complain one bit about it, 55 grain Berger’s at 3600 FPS and excellent accuracy at this point.

Maybe a 20 BRA or 20 Dasher and 40’s for crazy speed. The Dasher may be able to push the 55’s faster, some say they won’t stand the RPM’s.

Out of all the years of shooting I finally truly understand what ”inherently accurate” means. When I first built my 6.5x47 Lapua it took multiple types of bullets and powder. Then I found plain Jane 123 grain SMK’s seated .005” off the lands will literally shoot under .5” MOA at 100 yards for 20 plus shots in a row. I have many 5 shot groups under .25” MOA and possibly a few under .1” MOA at 100 yards. When you go from shooting fully custom 308 Winchesters, 223 Remingtons and 260 Remingtons and THEN start shooting a 6.5x47 Lapua. Well, it truly makes you realize it’s not just you, it’s the natural inherent accuracy of the cartridge too! That’s why I’m looking at either a 22-6.5x47 Lapua, 6/6.5x47 Lapua, 22 Dasher, 22 BR, 22 BRA and possibly a few other. Still not sure. What’s the difference in a 22 Dasher and a 22 BRA and all the other 22 BR wildcats? Thanks?

20 cal has less recoil if that’s a concern and when set up for Berger 55gr, I doubt any 22 cal could beat it at long range. But not sure if Berger is making the 20 cal 55gr anymore…

22 Dasher is a dandy in an 8 twist, as is the 6 Dasher. You will not go wrong with either one. Both of mine are shockingly accurate! The new
62 gr Hornady ELD-VT could be the holy trail in a 22 Dasher. Laser fast and would hit like a bomb! Hmmmm!

I know I will eventually do 22 BR or 22 BRA. The 20 BR with the 55 gr would be sweet but it is so expensive to chamber a barrel etc I have a hard time justifying a chamber designed for such a specific bullet that has 1 run a year plus a presumably short barrel life. The 22 BR just seems like a good balance of velocity, cost for powder, and barrel life.

When my 6 creed barrel dies I'm gonna rebarrel in 6BR. I need another action for a 22br.

I believe I know what I’m going with. The “Long Dasher” and some call it a “6-6.5x47 Lapua Improved”. For anyone not familiar with this Cartridge, it’s a necked down 6.5x47 Lapua to 6mm. It also has 40 degree shoulders. I’m not 100% how much case capacity you get, but I’m pretty sure it adds 3+ grains and you can push a 105 Berger at 3115fps. I just couldn’t build anything without a 6.5x47 Lapua as the parent cartridge. Then building it as a dasher tops it off. I stayed away from the Creedmore because it had a fraction of the records as the Lapua, if any records at all. I truly don’t mean that as a blow toward the Creedmore. It’s just simply facts. The 6.5x47 Lapua holds all these records. Eric Cortina’s 300 yard benchrest with a 600-49X, 10 shot 1000 yard group at 2.856”, 5 shot group at 600 yards at 1.058”, and I’m sure there are more. Crazy how inherent accuracy can help. I’m open to any feedback. I own a 20 Practical because of how simple it is to reload. This Long Dasher seems like a lot of work to reloaded. I’m still open to anything similar, but easier to reload.

If your looking for a speed demon go with a 22-6MM AI and shot 50 gr Blitzking at over 4300 fps. I know I can get over 4500 fps. But it shoots so good at 4300. I can hold on fur out to 450 yds

I'd say to realistically decide how far you want to shoot. I love my little 20 for accuracy and economy, but it will never be a good choice for even 500 yards. But I never do any 500 yard shooting, so it is fine for 90 % of my needs.

My next rifle is gonna be a nut barrel for my 40x which is now a 22BR. Prolly a 6 or 6.5 creed. Just to scratch the longer range itch. jd

I like the economy, you mean cheaper to shoot?? If you do do you drive a car that gets 40 mpg or a pickup that gets 17 mpg??

I have never looked at a rifle to save a 50 or 60 cents per shot.

These days, I'm pretty happy that my squirrel rifle (20 cal) uses just about half the powder per shot that a 6mm would. Bullets are also about half as much. If I shoot a thousand shots in a year. (not unreasonable), that is a real savings. And it is much quieter and pleasant to shoot. Barrel doesn't heat up very quickly and if I don't get crazy, it's not even a concern.

And yeah, I usually drive a car that gets thirty - forty MPG. jd
