Which scope?

I am looking for a scope for my hunting rifle that I also shoot long range for fun. I have a nightforce shv 5-20 on my other hunting rife and I am very pleased. With that being said I would like to know how it compares to the leupold vx6 4-24. Just looking for a little of insight on your experiences so I can make my desicion

Thanks in advance for any help

What Dusty said. I had a Nightforce Compition, loved the scope, then I sold it as I needed a bit of cash flow. Wish I would have never done it. But if you cant swing a Nightforce again, take a look at Sightron SIII line of riflescopes. Cant go wrong for the money.

I agree with some don't go backwards but if you must go to sightron. I got a leupold as I live in Oregon but what a piece of you no what?? we could never get it sighted in as it would not track right. sent it back to factory 4 times and it never got fixed. thank god cabelas took it back and I got a shv and love it. I have 3 sightron lll 6x24x50 on my long range target rifles and love them too. in my area we have had never had good luck with leupolds there redfields are a better scope for the money at least you can get them sighted in!!

I own several Nightforce scopes and I love them , but I have mounted a few XV6 scopes and shot a few more that belong to another friend. I am not so sure they are inferior to a Nightforce. I think if you compare side by side you might change your mind. Leupolds were getting dated and they had to do some thing and they did. Check them out !!

To me the difference is reticle vs. glass quality. I have the same SHV scope and absolutely love the reticle for hunting. I have no complaints about the quality of the glass in the NF scope either. However, glass quality always trumps a reticle because wont a simple crosshair still work if it is very late evening/extreme dusk, worst possible shooting light and the glass is what has to perform to gather enough light to see to shoot. Another way of saying it is that the reticle design matters not if you cant see the animal at the critical moment you really need to.
For long range hunting I also like the ability to remove the elevation adjustment cover and use it like an external turret on the NF/SHV. I have my come ups written on the inside of the eyepiece cover.
You may have all of these options with the Leupold...but, is the glass any better???? That is the real question and that would always be my deciding factor if I was going on say a once in a lifetime black bear hunt where I would really need it, I would switch scopes in a minute.

Be very very careful before you buy a new Leupold these days. I just tried my new VX-3i at the range yesterday on a known accurate 30/06, and it sprayed 3-4" groups, did not respond to elevation or windage adjustments. Checked screws, everything was tight as it should have been. Finally dry fired it while sighting the target and lo and behold the reticle shifted 2-3" as scaled on paper. Needless to say the scope is going back. Last Leupold. At this rate Nightforce and Vortex will not have competition in a few years.

Thats odd. I have a couple of VX-3 scopes and each one has an etched reticle. I was under the impression Leupold discontinued the use of wire reticles quite some time ago.

You are exactly correct about the current Leupold scopes. Go look thru both companies top end scopes. You'll be surprised. Nightforce may edge out Leupold but at twice the price. Your still getting superior quality glass at a better price. Sightron is another that's outstanding for the value.

I bought three nightforce scopes in the last 60 days, just so can form my opinion. An Atacr, NXS and SHV F1. I like them all but for the money the SHV holds its own. I hunt, I don't shoot competition. I've had all sorts of Leupolds and have sent two back, both were serviced and worked fine but it seems they are losing ground. I have a Sightron S3, love it, bright, repeatable, dependable. I have several SWFAs, love them too. The nice thing about todays market is we are spoiled, competition among scope manufactures is fierce. The quality is getting better and better, there are more choices than they ever have been. Reticles, styles, sizes abound. I remember as kid going down to the local gunshop and saving my money for my first Leupold, it was king of the hill. Things have changed. Last point, I buy most of my optics used, never been burned. I had to send a SWFA back, they gave me a new scope two weeks later. If you on a budget, hunt the used market, theres some deals to be had.

As others have already suggested you should try them side by side only your eyes can tell you. For a "hunting" scope the wider magnification range of the Leupold is IMHO a +. YMMV

There were problems with the Leupold when they introduced it. They might have got it fixed by now. I shoot out to 1800 yards with a 22x on top end. You have to look at FOV at 100 yards. Some Leupolds have small FOV. You also need to look at MOA in scopes. I like enough elevation so I can reach out there. Matt
