Which Savage Model:12 in 6BR to do both Bench Rest and F-Open Class

Need help in choosing one Rifle to do both jobs in Bench Rest and F-Open Class. I am looking at the Savage Model;12 Bench Rest and the Savage F/TR. Both in the 6Norma BR with 1 in 8" Twist. I called Savage and they will make a Model F/TR in 6 BR with 8" Twist and 30 " Barrel for me. Correct me if I am wrong I think that would make the F/TR Model suitable for F-Open Class. Should I consider having the barrel fluted or not? I heard that the Savage tend to feel barrel top end heavy. I will only be shooting out to 300 yds. and 600 yds. Any other thoughts or comments will be appreciated. THANKS

ive got the savage f class. it is a little front heavy. you could put weight in the butt to make it balanced. Im not sure about the benchrest.i think the forearm isnt quite long enough for f class, or so i hear. that might not be true. Try to find one in a local store to check it out. My f class shoots great. I dont think i would flute it yet. Get it balaced first and then if you cant make weight then flute it. Just my .02 worth. Hope this helps. You can pm me if you have any questions. Just to let you know, the accutrigger takes some getting used to, but after that its not bad at all.

F-T/R is 308 and 223. I have the Model 12 F-class in 6mmBR and use it for both the F-class and bench rest. But it cannot be used for F-T/R. It's a great shooter.

Thanks for the help guys.I'll get the F-Class Model.Any thoughts on the acation right bolt,right-eject,or RB,left load.+I thought I'll go with Farrell Base and Rings. Thanks again.

I see that there is 2 factory loads Lapua and Norma brands .So I take it most shooters load 6BR ammo. Iam new to this web. site but I see thay have a lot of info on 6BR cartridge.

My load is 30.3 Grns of RL 15 and 107 smks. 450 primers and Lapua cases.
The gun you want to buy depends on the style your shooting. Shooting f class you dont want to shoot with dual because youll have to readjust after every shot. But if you do most from a bench, it might be cool to use the dual port. But the Savage target actions are not as smooth on the bolt lift, so you ll have to use both hands to work the gun anyhow. (thats my experiance.) Hope this helps.

The best load I've used is 30 gr Varget, SMKing 107, CCI BR4 primers in a Lapua case. This load came off this site, as recomemded. It works great. So far I've shot 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards.

Just switched my 6mmBR 12 twist onto F class stock (was 6.5*284) as have a 6.5*47 arriving for the LRPV. It makes a surprisingly good BR stock. Probably better suited to the 6BR round as far as riding the bags goes and makes the weight restrictions over here due to hollow construction - don't know how the 30 inch barrel will go for weight though. At this stage using the repeater action with just front and rear screws at 65 inch lbs seems nicely tuned with last couple of 5 shot group in the teens. Will swap actions when other barrel arrives.
As said above I too think it is a little short in forearm length to be a great (larger recoil round) F class stock. Though some report good return to battery, I didn't find that with the bigger round. Finding the nice balance point seemed tricky.

I have two 12Fs, one originally in 6BR, the other 6.5-284. I also have a 26" .22-250 and 30" .308 barrels for them. Either will just make F/TR weight with a custom aluminum bipod, .308 barrel and a Nightforce 12-42 BR (18 lbs, 1 oz.).

The 12F does have a surprisingly good stock. An adjustable cheek piece would be nice but I could never make F/TR weight with it.
