Which Nightforce???

Im going to buy a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmore (when I can find one). Do a little bit of longrange??, 500-1000 yds, or so, and want to put a Nightforce on it. Always wanted one, but dont know the best all around retical, power to get. I have $1700. or so Cabelas points and want to buy the right one? Any ideas and help would be appreciated.

MIL or MOA? For MOA the 5.5x22 NSX or 5x25 ATACR with the MOAR or MOAR-T. I'm not a MIL guy, can't help you there.

Thanks, Im a MOA guy as well, What do you think of the new SHV scopes? They might be good enough for this application

The glass is good but I haven't spent any range time with one. I'll have to defer that to those who have.

The 12-42x 56 will get you out there and also you can shoot almost any yardage, excellent glass and clairty used on this site go for around 1100.00 new 1400.00 if you call optic plt and talk to them you can get it alittle less.

Optic plt??

I think he meant Optics Planet, probably got bit by autocorrect.

The 12x42 BR is a great piece of glass. I've got 2. But the 6moa per revolution, no zero stop and limited elevation travel might not be a great choice for a tactical rifle.

yes optic planet, Got it

Get a NXS 8-32. Make sure its MOA reticle and MOA turrets. I like NPR2. Save your money and buy a used one. Read about a zero-stop and decide if you need it or not. Hi speed turrets isn't a big deal to me.

The 8-32 is my favorite. The 12-42 has a limited amount of travel. The 5.5-22 isn't quite enough mag vs the 8-32 (granted I like more mag than most).

Don't worry about buying a used one, they're built like tanks.

Post a "want to buy" ad here and on snipershide. Good luck.

What's your mission? Hunting, big or small animals? Targets? Steel? A combination of these? All of the scopes mentioned perform well for a given function but some will be compromises or irrelevant for a specific task. For example, the 12-42 BR scope would not be a good choice on a hunting rifle. Define your main need and go from there.

Sport Optics in Louisiana gave me a decent break on the 12-42 NF, if it suits your needs. The NP2DD reticle is very nice for BR shooting.

If you want to hunt a 12x42 would be hard because field of view at 12x on the lower end would be really small. I would opt for something with a 4x or 5x lower power on the lower end. Matt

Good advice here. On the SHV, I've used the 5-20 and they are good scopes but depending on your target, animal, steel or paper, you could be lacking on the high end power for 1000 yds.
If opting for the SHV, I'd go with the newer model with the exposed elevation turret. My two cents on shooting 1000 yards would be to have a dedicated scope for that mission.

I have several of the NF 5.5-22x50 with an older NPR-1 Retical. Great all around scope. If you look carefully in the "For Sale" section, you might find one in your price range. I have used them on a .338 Lapua to make hits past 2000 yards and a .308 to kill deer at 100 yards.... Best of Luck!

A scope for tactical type matches and hunting will be a compromise for both. Ffp is pretty handy in a match when you're under time constraints and dialing takes too much time. If you're at the calibrated power it's not a problem but a lot of the time on the timed stages you will dial back to get on targets faster. Ffp is not ideal for hunting because a lot of the time you will want to be dialed all the way down on the power for closer shots and that means the reticle will be harder to find in a hurry.

Power range is actually a pretty easy part. 5-6 on the bottom and 20 or more on the top will work. For reference; I don't know if I've ever dialed higher than about 18 in a match but with a bedded animal way out there I'll dial to max waiting for the shot.

Zero stop or the lack there of, will cost you points eventually. You might make a few matches and never have a problem but some time you are going to be cranking on the knobs and forget where you're at and need to get back to zero to start over. We've all been there at one time or another.

SHV 5-20 ffp
ATACR 5-25 ffp
The new 7-35ffp

For nightforce, those would be my choices for a gun with the tasks you describe. The 7-35 might be a bit much on the low end however. If you go to a different brand there are other options as well.

The RPR and SHV will get you into production class matches also if you're ever inclined to shoot a match like that. Just a thought

Silly the way you worded the question. Kind of like..."Want a new Chevrolet. Which model should I buy"?

You don't say much about your uses. Short range hunting or shooting is a whole lot different than the 500-1,000 yards you say you want to do a ..."little bit of". What do you want to do MOST of?

You never mention power range that you think might be useful. Remember, power means field-of-view. If your low power is 12-15X that scope is near worthless for close shooting in any kind of hunting mode.

Parallex and focus are other issues. The BR scopes have objective lens parallel/focus rings. Slow but fine for ONE select distance. Otherwise you need fixed or dials on the scope.

Oh...the Chevrolet...I just want my grandmother to drive on with her wheelchair and go to the doctors. Will a Corvette do?

As stated before. Your question is oh so unreasonable without applicable details. My thought is you don't know enough to know how to ask a reasonable question. If so, do more research and try again.

Thanks for the help A.H. Just a general question. Im sure i'm not as smart as you,and i will do fine without your wonderful info. Everyone else had some helpful ideas. Is that all you do is stalk the site and try to belittle everyone.
