Which custom action?

I have an 8.5 RBRP round large thread BAT that should be here in a couple of weeks. I almost made myself crazy look at actions then again deciding on a gunsmith to put my gun together.

At the F-Class Nationals in TN, all different actions were well represented. A Remington action won, and old, old Teddy came in second, Jim Murphy was shooting two Baranrds, finished in the top 10, there were a lot on Nesika's,several of the National F-Class team shoot Nesika's)

I think that you will have a great action with any of the actions that you have mentioned.

Why did I buy a BAT? When I called BAT, a guy named Tom Dixon really spent a lot of time with me on repeated phone calls answering all my questions. Some of the other people, action makers) that I called almost would not give me the time of day. I went with BAT because they acted as if they wanted my business and the two gunsmiths that I interviewed liked working on BAT actions.

Universal gun registration in New Zealand was voted out just recently, after threats that it would take place. Finally, some common sense prevailed!

Not sure on the situation in Aussie, though I know that their handgunners had been delt a heavy blow by having semi auto's banned.

Michael.

Only the action has to be registered in Australia. Apparently there has been discussion amongst authorities about switch barrel rifles and possible registration for each barrel. I heard this rumour at the range from a few of the benchrest fellas that heard it from a few police that also shoot there.

I ended up going with a Surgeon. It has the same basic footprint as the Rem700 and I had a McM stock ready for it.
I guess advertising on this site works.

Barnards may not be pretty, but they drill the center out of a target. That makes them appealing to someone like me. Costing less than $1000, with a two stage trigger doesn't hurt them either.

If I had the resources and manpower, I'd design one myself. I've had an image of one in my head for a few years now and the only thing keeping it off the market is money and machinists :D -Rod-

I don't know why people the Barnard actions are such an ugly piece of kit. I looked at two of Jim Murphy's Barnards at the Nats in October and they were simply stunning to me.

What the heck, people from GA have no sense of style anyway.

Stolle's and stiller's are suppose to be good. Quadralocks, barnard Surgeon's...etc.

All are better than a factory action.

And yet, a factory action,m700's) won both the Open and F TR aggregates of the '05 FCNC. ;)

I'm going custom from now on, but I won't be selling off my M70's or my 700 anytime soon.

FatBoy brings up an interesting point. You can certainly win with a 700 or a Savage. I think all of us know someone in our clubs who shoots cleans with these two factory actions. So why a BAT, Viper or Panda, why spend the extra money.

Because it is fun to spend the money, knowing that your youngest child will never be able to attend college because of your expensive hobbies.

We are aficionado's, we want to shoot something different than the guy next to us.

I didn't know how to really spend money,I thought I did but I did not) until I started shooting with FatBoy,ElRoho, MoJoMan,Cochran and a host of other hammers in Tennessee.

All of these guys were shooting the most exotic looking rigs that I have ever seen. I called and ordered a BAT and three Broughton bbls the Monday after the Nationals.

I'll be darn if I am going to The People from TN out spend me,they have always been able to out shoot me).

Buy new gun..OR..Heart medication.... Easy decision, spend the money on the gun!!!!

Chuck,

I've never spent more than $1850 on a rifle. Sights/optics not included. The most expensive rifle I own, the WTC/Sitman built Panda, came complete with the 24x Leupold, mounts and all) for $1850. My Accuracy International Coopermatch with twin Border 6.5x284 barrels, $1800. I don't have any other fancy rigs.

Now, the rifle that Tracey is making for me now, will run me at about $2600, before optics/sights. That doesn't include tooling for a new chambering either. Damn, that's the first time I bothered figuring that out. I think I need a little crown&coke after seeing that  It's always cheaper to buy used!!!!! But it's nice to get exactly what you like.

You guys think F class rifles are expensive?,they are, I know) You get away without having to spend $500 to $700 more on irons sights and apreatures.

HOwever a custom action is not too bad when you consider having to pay a smith to truely blueprint and sleeve your action.

Also you get a flat bottomed action which will hold up in its bedding better.

Yeah I won an F-class competition with my Stock Tikka M 695 Master SPorter in 6.5x55. However when the big boys show up with their belly BR rigs...I can't hold as many X's as they can.
