custom vs rem action?

FTRinTexas said:
Frank - In your opinion, what years and serial number ranges were the best Remington receivers built?
Paul: No alphabet prefix serial numbers and those beginning with "A" and "B" seem to be the nicest: very high gloss blue, jeweled bolts, metal trigger guards and floor plates, (not plastic), milled followers, very high quality walnut stocks usable for a varmint rifle "as-is", and machining that shows more care. My newest is a "G" series that had the J-bolt, the first thing to be changed, and a side-by-side comparison with the older 700's make the quality difference very obvious. I believe the quality started to slide when Dupont sold the company, not sure what serial number range that happened. Have bought really nice ones, from private owners, for $250 to $325, leaves a lot "left-over" for a Neil Jones trigger ($70), and a Shilen,Hart,Krieger, etc. barrel. :)

A rem 700 /buying it from walmart, the rifle that is/ comes with a trigger and a recoil lug, and even after all the blueprinting and trigger work is still cheaper. Barrel? That's the key. Example: BAT, or Nesika, + Adams & Bennett = 0 wins. Search: John Lewis

My favorite walking varminter is a 22-250 based on an old Browning Hi-Power (made by Sako). All it needed was a better barrel to be a 1/4 minute shooter, along with a little load developement. The action was fine.

With one exception, all of my 700s have had one issue or another, some minor, some major. All correctable. I don't see any issue with starting with a 700 action if you already have one on hand. Any competent smith can turn it into a 1/2-1/4 minute rifle (at 100, at longer ranges the shooter deetermines whether or not it continues to hold that accuracy).

That said, any new builds for me take custom actions simply because there shouldn't be anything to correct and they already come with the features I want.

Let me pose a question, why not start with a high quality improved design 700 clone? Quality and tolerance wise it starts off where the factory blueprinted action might end up. No need to sleeve a bolt, bush a firing pin hole, replace the firing pin assy., redrill the scope mount holes, chase threads, square/face the action or any of the other things I've had to have done over the years.

My first custom action after thirty five years of blueprinted factory actions was a revelation. Flawless in fit and finish. The finished riflle is better than I'd expected. The first four break in shots printed a group small enough that I held off on the fifth shot to see if something had gone wrong bad enough that I wasn't on paper.

There is something to be said for settling for something better.

Why not a custom action ? Personally I want to be able to take something a little crude that does not stand a chance of winning in it's present condition . Remachine everything to as close to perfection as I can and turn it into a competive rifle . Oh by the way, those things mentioned in the above post I never tried putting the after market firing pin or bushing the pin hole . My guns still shoot under 1/2 minute of angle at 600yds when I do my part . The Rifler

I love it when folks say"when I do my part". When I read that I think he must have read the wind wrong, got the load wrong, had bag handling problems, didn't get the machine work right, and on and on.

Hey Butch what competiton do shoot ? Do you ever miss I believe that is the technical term for it . If it was"nt for shooter error my guns would shoot 1/2 minute all the time .So what competiton do you shoot ?

Shouldnt you always try to do your part !!
no matter what you shoot ????
If your not doing your part why bother........

Isn't the whole aspect of Practice,Practice,Practice because WE don't always do our part .Trying to get rid of those OOPS missed that condition or OOPS pulled that one ::).I mean all things being equal 9 out of 10 times it's the NUT BEHIND THE BUT right ;D

Yeah I go to a shoot I am there to win .I get four targets and I keep shooting right to the end that's my part to keep trying . THe end result is not always what I'm hoping for . All I'm saying is when I win or place well it's with something that I made better then it was .I'm not an exceptional shot I have no great bench technique .I just build good rifles that work far better than I can shoot them every now and then, it all comes together. Yes I practice ,practice and practice some more .After viewing the results I'll go to a shoot anyway.Oh yes when I go it is not with a custom action .

Clean up & rebarrel the 700 action for your varmint rig.

An AR platform will suffice to 600yds for a varmint rig, when assembled correctly & by pushing two pins you'll have the option to use multiple top ends/calibers.

The $2500-$3000 custom action rifle will discourage you IF you can't drive it correctly.

Some Customs aren't what they are cracked up to be.

Yes dan I have seen some one those rigs shoot very well . But here in Pa. for example you can't shoot nothing but tin cans with them . No hunting with semi auto rifles . TR

Rifler,
I shoot a little Benchrest and varmint for score. I guess that I get tired of that expression when people are talking about their rifles. "I can cover my shots with a dime all day long" if I do my part. My blunderbuss will shoot a 1/4" all day long "If I do my part". Next thing you know they pull out a billfold group that they have laminated.
How about this"My rifle is not up to snuff today, but I am on top of my game".
Butch

Butch as a builder and shooter we know of all the variables in componets conditions and many things beyond are control . All I was stating is no matter how well I build a rifle on a custom action or trued factory I can only shoot so good . And I happen to be very inconsistant I blame that on lack of technique on the bench . But it sure is fun when it all comes together . The competition never knows how i am going to shoot till its all over, neither do I for that matter .

Rifler,
When you have shot as many years as I and a few others on this board have you just roll your eyes when we hear this. The proof of how a rifle shoots is an aggragrette of 5-5shot groups at 100 yds and 5-5 shot groups at 200. Figure the moa average of those 10 groups and you have an idea of the capabilities of the rifle. Not pointing fingers at you necessarily, just at all the guys that hang around the range and tell stories and swap out billfold groups.
Butch

I got that Butch I 've been to some score matches 100yds . I can't hit that darn dot all the time either . That's why I shoot 600yds.You can have a bad target and stil do well .Have fun shootin and may your groups be tight . The rifler

Butch don't sell yourself short. Some of those score shooters and group shooters have found their way to 600yds,and they are doing very well. If you can shoot under 3" at 600 yds. you will do quite well . I encourage anyone reading this post if you ever thought your not good enough to compete ,give it a try you might surprize yourself.
