Which caliber for next build?

If your wanting to build a .22 cal there is a bunch to choose from obviously. I really enjoy the 22 cal centerfires, sounds like a fun project. I’m huge a fan of the 222, with Lapua brass and all the different dies you can play around with it’s a lot of fun. It’s not as fast as many but the accuracy is typically very good. I also have a lot of fun with my 22BR and 22PPC, both are Sakos and feed well. The 22BR smokes the little 222 but speEd isn’t everything, fun cartridge. I have a few 222s, a couple 223s, a 22PPC, 22BR, 221 fireball, but I gave you my two choices for the Criteria you laid out. If you open it up to bigger calibers then the mighty 6BR fits everything your looking for, it’s versatile, a huge variety of bullets available, excellent brass, lots of dies to choose from and very accurate. I have one set up for heavies and one set up for lighter bullets. If kids are involved I think the lighter bullets with a slower twist and zero freebore would be hard to beat. Whatever you choose it sounds like a fun project!

I am also in your boat thinking... I have a savage action with a 6.5 barrel that is not getting used ... thinking of pulling it and doing some thing... I’m leaning towards a fast twist 22 creed ... or br ... seems very versatile ...
On another note... is the ppc bolt face different then 473? Just curious because I might consider that....
( never mind I see it is different ... takes the ppc out of the running for me ) I do not know if that affects the OP’s options.. but just a thought

I'll tell ya, i've been thinking hard on this one also with my rifle build!
Went with 26"Shilen in 250 Savage.
But also wanting a 30" in 7mm-08AI.
I have all the tools already. Just need a barrel.
Not sure how thrilled i am at the prospect of having to sight the scope in every time i change barrels/cartridge though.

I have a couple of friends who have done just that.
Ed shoots that 125 grn Barns bullet out of a 1-17 twist At around 2950. He just put a verticals plastic spacer in the Remington magazine to make I feed correctly.

I change BBLs more often than some people change their underwear....on a BUNCH of guns. It's not that big a thing. With only one platform and two tubes...should be simple and REPEATABLE. I would bet once you remember that when I switch out BBL A for BBL B, I dial 3 moa up and one moa left, and when I switch back it is 3 MOA down and 1 moa right. You will most likely be within (or less than) 1/2 MOA.....

I'm currently converting a Savage Model 10 from 223 to 6mmSLR. I like the rifle - 26in heavy barrel - but 1-9 twist. A Tikka with a 1-8 was available, with all the good bits - Truflight barrel, Jard trigger parts, EGW 20Moa etc. Needs a good stock though... So decided on a 6 for FPR class next season. Criterion barrel - 28in contoured. Manson reamer purchased and a Whidden FL die delivered a while ago. Found a new replacement PTG bolt head locally (lucky) and It's all getting made over the next few weeks. The Savage already has the Choate Super Varmint stock and a Timney installed.
The FPR class is gaining some popularity - rifle can be any calibre under 8mm and be capable of remaining supersonic at 1000 yds. Must have a magazine, and only uses a folding bipod or front bag, and a rear bag or monopd. I'm sure that the 7mm will dominate, but Ill give it a go!

Think about a 30 BRA, or 30x47. The BRA will run 3100+ and the 47 3400+. I dont think they give up any to the BR for accuracy. The 47 should hammer a deer at those speeds.

I did this. It’s awesome, especially in a short barrel. My 16” 3 groove Lilja will push a 125SST 2,900. Add a suppressor & it’s magic. I chose it because I already had the reamer & all of the components/ tools. If I didn’t, I would consider the 30x47 to eliminate any special magazine spacers or short throw bolt stops. Can’t go wrong either way.

I need to finish the stock on my Walther KK300 for a club RF rifle. Next will be a switch barrel 300 RUM and 338 RUM. We have a 1 mile range close and I want to do it once.

Me too. I just had my 338LM re-barreled to 300 NMI so I can give it a try. We've made him lots of steel, but I still haven't been out there. You may reach out before showing up with the 338. I think he limits it to 30 cal.

Yes he does, but not by his choice. That is the reason I'm waiting on the 30 cal. barrel.
