Which caliber? 6mm or 6.5?

I was thinking of getting into F-class, and was wondering which 6mm or 6.5mm would serve me best. I like the idea of long barrel life, so I was originally looking at the 6NormaBR. This gun will also be a long range varmint rig. I figure I'd ask the masters their opinion tho lol.

Thanks.

I'm certainly no expert and I don't shoot "f" class but it's my understanding that it shine at the 600yd game.

But the 6BR is absolutely my #1 choice in a prairie dog town.

Oh God! Not this argument again.

6mm or 6.5mm put you into F-class open or "belly benchrest" so the rig is basically a benchrest type rifle and rests. The stock and action will be good for both, but, you will probably end up switching barrels for the two types of shooting.

As for F-class cartridge you'll need to decide how far most of your shooting will be and how windy it typically gets in your area. Also, what types of matches are shot regularly in your area?

The national F-class team uses the 6.5-284. If you are serious about entering competition from 800-1000yd, get the 6.5-284; this cartridge will give excellent combination wind drift resistance and low recoil. If you intend to shoot only 600yd and below, get the 6BR or 6BRX or other variants of the 6BR.

Go with the 6.5x47 Lapua. Good barrel life and ballistics are close to the 6.5x284 with pointed 130 VLDs. The 6.5x47 Lapua holds the HV Gun 600yd NBRSA world record group with the 130s shot by Don Nielson. Plus they are the cat's meow on ground squirrels out to 400 with 95 VMaxs.

One easy option would be to go with a Savage M12 F-class rifle in 6BR. Enjoy varmint & F-class with the BR, and then if you feel you're shooting enough 1000yd. F-class to justify it, get a pre-fit 6.5-284 bbl. Barrel changes are very easy on the Savages, and there's no way you're going to be able to build or have built a custom prone rifle for what the Savage costs.

In my opinion there is only one way to go.

6MM.

You can shoot either the 243 or the 6CM with barrel life of over 3000 rounds and in most cases up to 4000 rounds.

And you can shoot the 115 class bullet at over 3000 fps. From the 6CM you can shoot the 115 over 3100 fps.

This is just as good as the 6.5 x 284 at 1000 yards and much better than a 6br at any distance over 300.
