Which rifle would you buy?

I am not a BR shooter at all but I am very interested in the sport and thought that someday maybe sooner than later I would get involved. I wouldn't even know which rifle I would want or which class I would want to shoot in. So I ask the question, if you could have any custom rifle out there 'cal specific' for long range competition shooting and 'money was not a issue', what would it be or better yet what would you build and why? Who would you have make your barrel? What type of stock would be considered top of the line. What reloading components would you use and more specifically what type / bullet weight,BC). What optic's are consider the best there is? Which action and trigger would you use?

I know this will probably require a lengthy response if you get specific and I have been reading a lot about the sport so if you just want list it out that would be enough for me. I would just like to get a idea what pro's are using. I will respect and appreciate any response given.

Thanks 7mmXbolt

Best advice....somehow, somewhere, GO to a match....Read all you can here and on BRC.
The equipment in the sport is constantly evolving.....just when you think you have the latest and greatest....another hot chambering starts to win.

Well, LHSMITH said a mouthful and he is right. You can learn more at a match than reading websites. And someone is bound to stick you behind the trigger of their rig. Subscribe to Precision shooting magazine. Go to the websites of BR clubs, read the match results and note the equipment lists..

Reading your post, you should choose the 'Range/distance' at which you wish to compete as their are equipment differences between shooting 1&200yd BR vs 600/1K. Holler where your located at and someone will chime in as to where the closest match to you is..

Jump in friend.

7mmXbolt,

I shoot 600 yds IBS benchrest. Both guys are correct. Go to a match, and see what others are shooting. Used equipment can be a good start, but you don't want out of date equipment . See What the winners are shooting. You want go wrong with any of the top actions or barrels. I am currently shooting a Bat M action in 6BRX Krieger 8tw barrel Nf 12 x 42 Br scope Berger bullets Varget powder, Fed 205GM. Wilson seater dies and custom F/L die.

Hey guys thanks for your replies. I agree I really need to get to a match. I live in New Hampshire and will be joining a local gun club next month and I do believe they are involved. They do have a 600 yard range so that's a plus. I just thought if I could get a little insight on what the top guys /gals are shooting I would have an idea what I'm looking at and what to look for. I do realize you don't necessarily need the best equipment to compete, however knowing what to stay away from would be a big help. If you could point me in the right direction on a good match barrel maker that would be nice. I have been considering Ernie Stallman at Bager Barrels in Wisconsin. Have any of you ever used his barrels before? For those of you who don't know of him he builds custom barrels for Browning, Winchester, & a few others not to mention custom match barrels for individuals across the country and with great success. I was thinking 200 - 600 range competition as I have some experience shooting those distances in the Military. But that's another story. Any information you could give me would be helpful.

Excellent 280man, I knew there must of been someone near by I just didn't know of anyone who could tell me that. I am about 40 mins from Keene. Maybe I can arraign to visit his facility. I hand load for all my hunting calibers and a .308 Rem M700P TWS I have that could be converted to a match gun with little effort. I would be interested in seeing his sizer die up close. Thanks again for the link.
