Which 30 cal for 1000 yards and beyond

Local range in my area is adding onto the range and taking it out to 1250 yards. I'm wanting to shoot a 30 cal at this and would like some feedback between these two cartridges.
#1 is a 300 wsm with a 1-11 barrel which is a turn key package here on the Internet
#2 is buy a barrel and have it chambered in a 300 WM and buying a bolt for one of my other rifles to have it a switch barrel switch bolt rifle. I can either do this to my 40x BR gun or I have spoken to Kevin Rayhill and having him chamber a barrel and putting together a bolt for my savage LRPV.

Which of the two calibers will most likely be better off at this distance?

I'd suggest you try shooting one of those magnums for 20+ rounds before you decide what caliber you want to commit to. The 7, 6.5 and 6 mm cartridges are less abusive and very capable.

That 6 .5 barrel of yours went 2 straight at 1550 yds on Ole Chuckie
a I put it away.

Got a hit one day at 1650 yds and I put it away, ask Hitman he witnessed
it. I have not shot it since and now you own it.

That being said the ole saying is 'new barrels and new brass win matches'

I shot 156 rounds through my .300 WSM this past weekend, 230 Hybrids @ ~2850. I was a little sore from pulling targets but not from shooting. My F-Class rifle weighs almost 22 pounds and the felt recoil is not bad. Managing the recoil on the rest is another story, but doable. If James can use a muzzle brake, recoil should be a non-issue. Regarding the efficacy of other calibers: they will all do the job but are increasingly difficult to estimate in wind as the B.C. goes down. Currently, Berger's 230 Hybrid Target is the highest B.C. bullet available below caliber .338. Another caveat is that they require a minimum 10" twist. I'm currently using a 9.75" twist and might order some barrels at 9.5".

Either one would work. Is 1:11 enough twist for the bullets you want to shoot? The 300wm has a slight edge with greater powder capacity.

If punching paper is your only goal there are many smaller rounds out there that will get the job done for less cost all across the board.

I've had .308's up to .300 Lapua. Since you are going to be shooting to 1250 my choice would be the .300 WSM. I like the case design and what you get for performance from it. ;)

IIWM Get the WSM.

A 300WSM can reach 1250 with authority.

I have a 300WSM and many many other chamberings and calibers. The 300 WSM has accuracy and versatility.

They are both the same CALIBER.

What are you saying Gman? (cartridges)?

If your looking to buy a barrel and a bolt I would look at the 300RUM. Get a 30" HV barrel and put a good brake on it. I shoot 230 HyBreds with a reasonable load of Retumbo at 2950 out of a 27ish barrel with a Schrewd (sp) varmint brake on it. The gun is 16lb with scope and I have no worries putting many rounds through it in a day. But being what it is, that day allows enough time for things to cool down as well. 8)

Yes, cartridges is the correct term.

It is like one of those paragraphs with the jumbled up letters. You can still read it and understand what it means. That is how are brains work, well most of rs. :)

If your shooting game at 1300 or less or paper out too 1500 I am taking the 300WSM. If you want a little more take the 300RUM,
IMHO those are the only 2 I would pick from.

Before I had the .300 Lapua I had 3-.300 rum's. The Lapua was for ELR, the RUM's for 1000 yard or more. Either cartridge, .300 WSM or the .300 RUM would do, I'd lean towards the WSM.

I've decided on the 300 WM based on I already have a competition die set and I have 200 pcs of RWS brass. So I couldn't see starting anew with dies and brass. The wsm is a great cartridge and I'm sure it do what the 300 WM will out to the distances I plan to shoot at.
