So I am at the range today shooting a few bolt action rifles offhand at the distant gongs. It was one of those times I could not miss anything I aimed at. A younger guy shows up and proceeds to un case a couple of those now popular several thousand dollar long range bolt action and AR type rifles topped with gigantic Night Force scopes .
I am happily banging steel while he pulls out a smartphone and a Kestrel and loads in info. He misses his first few shots off a bipod kicking up dust while my bullets continue to slam home. I go to grab another gun when he approaches me and asks "what's your platform". I hesitate not knowing what he means. "What kind of rifle is that you are shooting?" Now I get it.
This is a Remington Model 700 BDL short action in 7mm-08. It has the original 22" barrel with a real walnut stock. The scope is an M8-12X Leupold I bought new in 1980. "I have never seen one of those before" he says.
I knew that.
