What's your platform?

So I am at the range today shooting a few bolt action rifles offhand at the distant gongs. It was one of those times I could not miss anything I aimed at. A younger guy shows up and proceeds to un case a couple of those now popular several thousand dollar long range bolt action and AR type rifles topped with gigantic Night Force scopes .

I am happily banging steel while he pulls out a smartphone and a Kestrel and loads in info. He misses his first few shots off a bipod kicking up dust while my bullets continue to slam home. I go to grab another gun when he approaches me and asks "what's your platform". I hesitate not knowing what he means. "What kind of rifle is that you are shooting?" Now I get it.

This is a Remington Model 700 BDL short action in 7mm-08. It has the original 22" barrel with a real walnut stock. The scope is an M8-12X Leupold I bought new in 1980. "I have never seen one of those before" he says.

I knew that.;)

Now you know the “platform” you use. And he will have a story about the way guns used to be back in the olden days

I very much like and use a 7mm-08. It is a very efficient and accurate cartridge that has never let me down. I am a 700 platform kind of guy myself. See a lot of those so called "precision" rifles and AR long range types...what ever floats your boat. He's a young man and we are all on the same team, when I get in a situation like this I cut him some slack, answer his questions and maybe make a new friend.

Exactly. I handed him that rifle and five rounds stating he had to shoot them standing offhand. He hit the 200 meter 13" gong once at 7 o'clock and was happy.

I was at a range a few years back. My smallest steel plate is 7” and I had it set at 400 yards the farthest you can shoot there. I was shooting one of my BRX’s and 7” at 400 yards gets boring real fast. A guy sets up next to me w a Savage Tactical rifle of some sort with some really big cheap tactical scope and asks if he can shoot my steel too. I tell him sure. He emptied at least 30 rounds and never hit once. He said something about the scope being off...

"My platform is ___________ years of experience" (Fill in a numerical value of 10/20/30/40/50/60 in clearly written ink ONLY, as applicable).

M8 12X is an awesome scope. Still. Seemed to work, too. :) hey, at least the other fella was curious. He may be open to advice.
