What's your dream build for the new year?

mikeinct, good luck with the rebarrel.I have a slow twist CZ 527 Lux,223.Took the scope off a few years ago....It's been a solid performer with cheap factory ammo so we've been using it as a "fun" gun, shooting offhand at clays with irons.

All of my CB sporters have loads developed on mag lengths. And their ability to survive being jacked pretty hard up through the ramp/loading process. These have all been push feed. The 527 presents a little different challenge,in that respect.Probably snag the hunter BR scope first(as it applies to OP)....putting it though the paces on the 527?

We only have 150 yd range so it's all "short range" for me.Just need to work on dialing scopes, specifically, how it works for hunting and field work.

Thank You, I have not even thought about getting the little CZ to feed cast bullets thru the mag yet..Another issue..First things first.. I have to get that rig a new barrel & some sights fitted...I'm hoping with a good quality barrel that rifle will be a real fun gun..The old Lyman FN,GC, 65 grain #257420 was quite the performer in my old 257 Roberts rifle..This barrel that was Re-bored is just a joke now..I should have left it a 223 caliber & learned to cast smaller bullets..Grin.. Thanks Again, Mike in Ct

I have an action and stock just begging to be finished out and I have the desire for something a little different. Something in a 25 cal. Looking around at what might work is a 25 Dasher built around the Shiraz Norma long neck case. I have no idea how it might perform velocity wise but thinking it should get close to 3000 fps with a 100 grain bullet.
The other option was to make a 25 Creedmo.....r. But I had rather not take the flack from hogpatrol. Besides, I agree with him.
There are two things I have a weakness for. 25 caliber rifles and beautiful Oriental women. Both can be expensive to operate and maintain.

i have done 2 different 25 br and they would launch 100 grain ballistic tips at 3000 fps and were deadly on deer

If you decide on the 25BR, let me know. I have 100 pieces of LAPUA brass neck-up and ready to go, along with a new/unused JGS reamer.

Thanks, but it will be a 25 Dasher based on the new brass from Shiraz. It is however, tempting.

Go for that 1/4 bore fun gun..Not enough people shooting that size bullet these days...I miss my old 257 Roberts..then I remember how much trouble it was getting that old Ruger M77 to shoot was..Mike

I have two builds in progress at this time. Both will be completed by me. Both on R700 trued actions (by me).

1) 26" .223 7twist MTU Rock Creek in a McMillan A3-5 set up to run 77-82gn bullets. I may try the 90's down the road. Harris bipod, PTG bottom metal. Timney CE trigger. I'll run my PST on top.
2) 26-28" .243 7twist M40 Rock Creek in a Remmy 40x stock with BDL. Timney CE trigger. Harris. HST on top.

My dream is to build my own rifles. In addition to the above components I'm tooling my lathe up to be able to do this. I'm also working on purchasing a small mill. Wish me luck, I'll be needing it.

I do have another "dream" rifle but that one will have to wait until the funds are replenished...

Dave Bruno just built me one but with a scoville.
It was my dream build . Bat DS kreiger 6PPC Jewell trigger. Really nice.
You don’t see many Borden’s in short range benchrest. But that could change.

You are right. They don't show up on too many match reports. That game is dominated by BAT. I know Roy Hunter and Dave Bruno have done okay with Borden, so I'll try to swim upstream too. Hopefully the current isn't too strong.

Howdy !

I've been considering a new .25"calibre dual-role varmint/target rifle, for a while now.

For varminting, it'd be used for groundhog and hopefully one day soon.... PDs.

My thought is to go w/ a .250-3000 and use a l-o-n-g barrel, to boost the expansion ratio.
With a barrel in the 29" -31" range, ER would be in the 9.5 -10 range. That bodes good barrel life, which would be welcomed.

The long barrel would allow me to shift the powder choice to one w/ "slower" burn rate than would be used w/ the more common 22-24" barrel lengths. I'd also go w/ a less temp sensitive powder, such as
IMR4955. H4350 and IMR4451 could be impressed into service, if need be.

A whole bunch of hand wringing has been done over the years, about .257" cal bullet choices ( or lack thereof ). Hornady's new-for-2018 .25" cal 110 ELD-X would bring a new level of capability to a long-barreled .250-3000. And I myself would give them an ernest try, fer sher.

I'd probably also try use of .22-250 Lapua brass, necked-up to .25" cal. While I don't have to have the SR primer.... it would be something new to try w/ a .250-3000, mimicking some of the newer 6mm & 6.5mm cases/cartridges.

I'd have to consult a barrel wt calc chart, but anticipate a heavy 1.375" diam ( maybe for the entire length ); as that is the OD of my Wichita WBR1375 action. I'm thinking the rifle ( for use shooting from a fixed position ) would easily top 17+ lb, so... recoil would be negligible.

With regards,
357Mag

I'm going for a Red Headed Stepchild. My kid is moving to Reno Nevada to do her anesthesia thing and I figure since I'll be going to visit every once in a while I may as well do a little coyote calling while I'm there. It's way to much trouble to take a gun back and forth on a plane and I'm not all that keen on leaving one of my good calling rifles out there I thought I'd put something together and leave it. Phase 1, go to the parts bin and see what's there. 700 action that I trued up about 15 years ago.....check. Jewell trigger.....check. Hart heavy varmint taper barrel that I can recontour to a 5 taper.....check. 700 ADL stock......check. Pretty much all the parts are in house so add a little time and electricity to the lathe and BINGO a butt ugly rifle that should shoot .3xx or less that's threaded for my suppressor to send out when she moves. I have a good Lapua brass spec reamer in .22-250 that oughta do the job quite nicely.:D

This is going to be the year for a 1000 yard rifle. Rem. 700 action Jewell trigger ,Pacnor barell with Sightron on top . Long way off as all I have at present is the action and stock. 300 Win Mag

Hello Muleman...You make sure you tell Chris up at Pac-nor you want a fast enough twist to handle the 235Gr Berger bullet..& get a nice muzzle brake..You will enjoy shooting that rifle finished to about 17 lbs..Mike in Ct

I will do that, what contour do you suggest ? Got any idea what rate works for the Bergers.
Weigh up the parts you have on hand..Let Chris know the finished weight you want, he can turn the barrel to the correct contour to get the weight you want..Way Back when, before the WSS 300 mag..The 300 Winchester was some fine rig for long range..I'm glad to see you have interest in that old school caliber..I think the 1-10 twist is good enough but let Chris tell you for certain..Good luck with your project..Ringing steel at 1000yds is some fun...Mike in Ct
