What's your dream build for the new year?

Going to make my dream gun. Ok so its my third dream gun. Already have a BRX and 6.5x47. Anyway This one will be in a wildcat I am working on. This is the stock(see photo). Going with a 1:8 twist barrel, 30in long taper to .9 at the muzzle. Kelbly Atlas action from Premier Accuracy. Single feed left port right bolt. Probably get another Leupold BR scope at 40x or get the new Vortex, just depends on the funds I have left by spring.

Kelbly Black Bear action. Switch barrel 260ai/ 7 saum or 7 wsm (need to research), Bix and Andy trigger, undecided on stock but probably a McMillan. Top It off with a S&B scope, hell maybe I'll throw a Dasher barrel in the mix.

I'm finally going to put together a 6br repeater on a Tikka 595 action. Nothing too lofty. I started to wonder what other guys here were dreaming of building in the new year. Share your ideas, please.

Something I haven't had in a real long time...an honest truck gun. An ugly-as-sin, short-barreled, DBM-fed, hits-what-it's-aimed-at TOOL. Steel, whitetail, coyote and the occasional free-range chicken* (courtesy of @Westex91). I haven't worked out the specifics, and it's definitely not a dream build (I'll probably just buy a barreled action & wing it), but one of those "I need this" items.

*Ok, maybe not the chicken. Everything else listed is fair game, though.

Well, I am going to order a rifle I haven't handled in 50 years. My grandson got an AR for Christmas and he has convinced me that I need one so that I can go plinking with him. So, I have a RRA 15 Varmint 24" barrel in .223 coming. I'll replace the trigger first if I don't like the feel. Keep thinking this will be the last one. I have only sighted my .20 Practical in and it shoots better than great! I also have 6.5 Creedmoor sitting in the safe that is yet unfired. Guess it's gonna be a busy year.

Exactly what I’m looking for as well, I’m good on br guns and nicer steel guns( big calibers I let cool between shots). I want something that is the right tool for steel and pesky coyotes. Solid gun That is ok getting a few scars on it

Slow twist stainless .223 sporter for cast topped with an HBR 6X.
I'll do you one better: I got my little CZ 527 .223 Carbine rebored to a 25caliber just to shoot cast bullets & up to 90 grain jacketed stuff..Long story short DON'T Anybody go the re-bore route !! Not w the hack I used..note only one guy doing that small a barrel in the lower 48..The Gun came back a year & month later, missing front sight, free bored up the wazoo, totally wrong throating for cast bullets..Rough interior, fouls horribly & shoots like SHEET....Oh, The Gunsmith got the 1-12 twist rate correct..the rest of this job was a total disaster that will be redone with new barrel & iron sights.. I was trying to keep this thing looking original..Wish Me luck with the new barrel job...Mike in Ct

Get a .20 Practical upper for that RRA - you'll love it! I'll bet you find time to shoot it. Often.

IMO, an AR .20 Practical is the ultimate predator set up, if that's your cup of tea.

My next build, however long it takes me, will be a Match Grade 6mmbr built around a Defiance (possibly Rebel or Stryker Ridge) Action and a 26" - 28" Broughton barrel that is to be used in short distance which is all I do anymore. I need to do some more studying on which action would work best for this particular rig and stated purpose. But accuracy is critical so I need to get this right from the git go. A stainless Trued Rem 700 Action is viable alternative although I'd rather have the Defiance Action, money permitting.

I would LOVE to find a "nice" Martini, OR rolling block, convert it to center fire and make sure it was "very reliable" then fit a heavy barrel chambered in my "20 TCM" Wildcat. May never happen but so far, it hasn't cost me anything to dream.:D I don't ever shoot what I've got.

Actually it's been my "Dream Build" for quite a while, just never got to it. I do have the "20 TCM" so at least that's a start.;)

Why Rebel or striker ridge actions over say Borden/Kelbly/BAT?

6PPC LV build. Borden B, RBLPRE in a red Roy Hunter stock. Krieger barrel. Jewell trigger. 42x44 NF Competition. BAT rings. I'd like to say I'm building it, but it's far beyond my capabilities. Dave Bruno will do the job.

Dave Bruno just built me one but with a scoville.
It was my dream build . Bat DS kreiger 6PPC Jewell trigger. Really nice.
You don’t see many Borden’s in short range benchrest. But that could change.

With all this LR record crap, king of the 2 mile, etc.. a cheytac based case may be on the horizon. Not looking for or expecting anything from it, but I would travel for these competitions, and have fun if the rules within reasonable limits.
No parts list yet.
The $12K+ range finder a big deterrent at the moment.

JLT, I have a 20 Practical AR...20"bbl., 10 twist and I am wanting it to be my predator gun. While it shoots good(3/4"-1"), I still think it should shoot better and I don't seem to be getting velocities that others are posting...what load combination(s) are you using? Powder, primer, bullet etc.? Thanks

I am having tom merideth bed a defiance rebel with target tang target port integral lug and extended threads on the receiver into a McMillan hunter benchrest stock and a jewell trigger. I have not decided which caliber yet. it has a 308 bolt face with no ejector right bolt right port. I like the 1 piece bolt. and I have got good recommends on theses actions from top gunsmiths. I have always got bats, but no one had what I wanted in stock, and the lead time was too long, so I am going to give defiance a try.

Gene,

Any powder that works well in the .223 will work well with the .20 Practical. IMR 8208 XBR, Varget, H4198 and H335 are my favorite powders for this round - H335, H4198 and 8208 for the 32 gr. bullets and Varget for the 39 and 40 gr. bullets. IMR 8208 also sees use with the heavier bullets. I shoot both the Sierra Blitz Kings and the Hornady V-max bullets. Your 1:10 twist should be fine for the entire range - mine are 1:11 (bolt action and two AR uppers). As for brass and primers, I've been using LC '09 brass and Tula SRM primers. CCI 450s have also given me good results.

If you're using ball powders like H335, finding the right powder charge can be a bit of a chore. Ball powders tend to perform their best in a fairly narrow pressure band close to max pressure. The extruded (single base) powders are much more forgiving in that respect.

If you're looking for a good powder across the bullet weight range, give 8208 a try. I've found it produces excellent velocity (3,800 + with a 32 gr. V-Max) and all of my .20 Practicals shoot little bitty groups with this powder.

PM me if you want load specifics. Be happy to help.

Happy New Year!
