whats wrong with 30-06? am I missing something?

One of my '06's is a Whitworth with a 24 inch bbl. It'll put a five shot group easily in an inch, and that's with an almost 70 year old codger shooting it.

yeah, i wasn't too much into them until I developed a load for a friends

I get pretty regular first round hits at 600 on plate with it as does he

There’s nothing wrong with the 30-06, I think it has a bigger fan base than many people think. It’s versatile, lots of options for components, loaded ammo abounds. It may not get the press the new stuff gets but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a substantial fan base.
One of my three 30-06 rifles was owned by my grandad, my father and now me…. It’ll go to one of children and it’s still filling tags. Pre 64 with a fixed vintage 4x Leupold. My favorite 06 is an early Ruger #1, handy rifle with a gorgeous stock.
It certainly is dated. I’ve always thought of the 06 as the cartridge that really isn’t spectacular in any way but does everything good!

to around 1900. For the .30-06 cartridge, they were suitable because

as accurate (about half the group size) as the .30-06, it was not
easy to discriminate shooting ability amongst the top shooters. So, the
NRA changed the highpower target's respective scoring rings in '66 to about
half their original size. Finally, the ability to discriminate shooting
skills was much easier and much more fair to everybody.
But a few folks didn't like that. Those who chose to keep shooting the
.30-06 found out that instead of shooting perfect scores or only dropping
a point or two like they did on the old target, they never shot perfect
scores any more and dropped one or two handfulls of points in each match.
A lot of these folks cried `unfair' about this. Some of them even tried
to disallow anybody shooting a .308 in their local club matches. Some
even protested to the NRA about this so-called `unfair' bunch of rules
that allowed the .308 and targets with smaller scoring rings to be used.
An old timer in his 90s told me many years ago that the folks who liked
to use the various size black powder target rifles at the turn of the
century cried `unfair' when others began shooting the .30-06 and getting
better scores than they did.

Makes me wonder if many of the old timer 30/06 guys complaining.....
..... were using factory/military ammo
not handloading
and not using custom barrels

because ummm If Hathcock could make kills out to 1300 with one and a 9 or 10x scope
173 gr SMK's and a custom fat barrel......
I think guys who know what they're doing with custom rigs would beg to differ how accurate an 'O6 is

The 30-06 is the best ALL AROUND cartridge ever made for the needs of our country. The only reason other cartridges are all around is so people can reinvent the wheel and make money and have some thing different. And yes recoil is a big factor with so many older people that are the ones driving the market. I still love mine, the bench rifle the most. Even if other cartridges are more accurate, they can't do it all like a 30-06.
Great new cartridges like the 243 wssm have made it obsolete.

No, my FL die is set up to bump shoulder minimally.....set up using L.E. Wilson Guage. I was also running mid range loads....190 sierras with H4350. Would get 4 firings before I could tell that a separation was in the works
I wonder how many elk, deer, antelope, etc.are harvested every year

I bought an ‘’06 as my first big game rifle because I didn’t reload and you
could find factory ammo at every country store and gas station (30-30 too).
I reload now and plenty gooder bullets avaiable now.

That's what my Dad said, during last days in Bataan when the firefights were close and personal. He was a trooper with the famed 26th Cavalry Regiment.

I was driving home from shooting today thought that my old truck is like a 30-06. Sure a new 4 door diesel truck gets better milage and is easier to drive than my 6 speed manual transmission and my 496 ci. big block, and it is also not the fastest, with 410 gears, but it will do anything a new truck will do for me and it's much more fun to drive.
