whats wrong with 30-06? am I missing something?

Gotta love these cartridge specific threads....

I'm 59 and don't currently own a 30/06. I have in the past.

I look at the 06 like I look at H4831sc, not great at any one thing, but pretty darn good at just about everything. I think it is a classic that is suitable for 90+% of hunting in North America.

So I'm going to assume that you're under 40 years old. You've never had to kill anything that could possibly eat you, stands 10 or 12 ft tall and is pissed off.
I don’t know. I will want more than an 06 if a 12ft tall pissed off critter is looking at me to be it’s next meal. That sounds like a stout 45-70 at a minimum to me!

I got into long range way back shooting 190 SMK over IMR-4350. Reloder 26 really changed the game for heavy 06 loads. Eye-popping speeds with 200+ gn bullets. I was able to push the 208gn up to 2850fps out off a 22” Rem 700 from the 1990s. That’s traditional 300 magnum territory without the usual damage to the brass if you tried it with a “normal” powder.

That said, I don’t like how much I have to trim -06 compared to modern cartridges and it just doesn’t hold vertical at distance.

I have three rifles in 30-06. I’ve thought about selling one due to the redundancy, but I can’t bring myself to give one up.

I have noticed that also. At 800 no problem but often at 1000 yards the vertical rears it's ugly head. I get 5" groups but they are stacked in a straight line under the bullseye. I thought it was me. it seems like with 200 gr. + bullets it needs about 150 more fps. Guess that's why the 300 wsm does so good at 1000 yards.

Is there any real reason for the 100+ year old caliber is being ignored by so many people? Maybe people are scared of the recoil? Or there is something I dont know that everyone else knows about the 30-06.

has it not been around for over 100 years?

is it not able to kill everything that walks, including big game?

is it not accurate?

is it not able to be bought at every gun shop that you walk into?

I will keep on shooting the 30-06, I will Keep hitting my targets, killing my targets and buying my 30-06 everywhere that has ammo! Wesley
Stop it......Zip it! If you keep this up all of the trendy people that have not figured out how to use a range finder and dial a turret will switch over and buy up all of our brass and ammo!

Before cheap accurate range finders, better bullet designs, better powders everyone wanted a faster flatter cartridge. That meant larger case capacity over and over and over again!

There is nothing wrong with 30-06 especially given the bullets we have today. Depending on bullet selection and the range you intend to hunt at it can do amazing things. 130-150gr Barnes TTSX out of a 30-06SPRG or 30-06AI is stupidly deadly with low recoil out to 400-500 yards easy. Hard to beat 168gr.-180gr. Partitions, A Frames, Accubond, Cor-Lokt, Scirocco and II etc....

I am a die hard 300WM lover been reloading it since 1995 first cartridge I set up to reload. I used that 300WM for target shooting at long range. It was a while before I got a lighter one to hunted with. That said for hunting in North America I would not feel under gunned with a 30-06. I own both.

The 30-06SPRG and 30-06AI today can both grossly out perfom the 308Win. If someone gets all hot and bothered by the 308Win you can not then find fault in the 30-06 which can grossly out perform it. This is not the 1940's or the 1950's it is not even hard to get a 30-06 to smoke a 308Win.

Likewise a 270Win will outperform the wonder boy 6.5CM in hunting situation. Sure some knuckle head can make a really bad argument and fudge the numbers to produce the result you want but all but the most ignorant tend to see through this.

The 280AI is almost magical when you look at how close it gets to the 7RM with what 30gr. less powder?

The 6.5-06 is another lead ballon that is amazing.
