What's the "hot property" scope, these days?

What are the two "side" reticles, left and right of the verticle, below the horizon? Reanging reticles I'm guessing...

Left is more precise mil reticle to use the formula for ranging. Right side is expedient ranging. If it fills the gap that’s the corresponding range.

Don't decide until you do a deep dive on the Valdada Recon G-2 4.8-30x56.

Rick
Do you have one? I’ve heard nothing but the highest praise regarding image quality. Val is local to me. Going to have a look sometime soon. I love FFP, but want to see reticle for myself.

Yes, I have one and couldn't be happier. Look into the glass choices and the 150min of internal adjustment. Extremely well thought out scope. It sits on a MPA 300WSM sniper gun and really completed one awesome package.....The Recon replaced a Kahles 624 and I really do like the Recon better.

Rick

If it’s for a PRS rifle, my recommendation is to look in the mid $2k range (considering where you listed your budget) and find the reticle that fits your style of thinking. Don’t worry about everyone else’s preference and all of the tactical hornshwagglery about reticle science. It’s a preference.

Things to consider:
Mil vs MOA - most guys use Mil. The brain is conditioned to think in terms of a base of 10, like Mil. Also it makes communication with your squad mates and learning much easier.

Illumination - not just for low light. Sometimes the reticle can get lost on darker targets and backgrounds. Certain reticles are not available illuminated (Leupold PR2 on 7-35x56 Mk 5HD, for example. Nudge, nudge, Leupold...)

Reliabaility - Dont confuse this for warranty. If too many people have first hand experience with the warranty department being great, it still worse than the customer base who never had to find out. A dead scope with a great warranty is still a crappy car ride home from the match. Been there, done that...

That all said. Go to a local/regional 1 day match and get behind as much glass as possible. Guys love to let you take a look. They might even let you look to get a sense of finding trace. Ask for help on this during the match, so you know what to look for and where. You are guaranteed to see quite a few brands of glass on people rigs possibly even within your squad. Mount the Ares BTR identify the shortcomings and what you would like different in an upgrade, that will tell you the most (maybe you’ve done this, already? If so, be specific about what you do and don’t like, and we can help steer from there.)

Chinese scopes and other optics can have very good glass these days. But you have to be careful that you aren’t fooled by the diamond dangling in front of the dung pile. The biggest difference I’ve seen is that over time the Chinese glass and coatings will deteriorate and gradually produce worse and worse images. Everything is great for a while and you think you got an amazing deal but then a while later after normal to hard use in the field where lenses have to be cleaned often you notice it’s hard to focus or not as bright as it used to be in low light. This is usually due to cheap coatings wearing off and/or lenses falling out of alignment.

Top tier quality Japanese and German schott glass scopes with great durable coatings from well renowned manufacturers deliver the same crisp and bright image 20 years later as they do when the scopes were brand new.

Then we all know about the difference in mechanical reliability. A Chinese scope usually cuts corners to save money by reducing the quality of glass/coatings and internal components. Which of course are the most important parts of a scope.
I probably wouldn't argue any of these points. But... I haven't forgotten what it's like to be an impecunious shooter, even though those days are 40+ years behind me. So long story short, if we, i.e., Ledd Slinger and I can afford top-shelf 'scopes, then more power to us. Not everyone is at that stage in their life though, so if a top-line Chinese made 'scope fills the financial and practical bill, then I would say that is what they should buy. Which was actually my point. It's noice to have nice things, but you don't have to spend a fortune to get decent glass.

Well in that case I would tell someone to look at the Meopta Optika6 line of scopes. Czech made, affordable for most people and better optics than most any other Chinese made scopes in that price point.

Yeah my buddy over at panther hallow has done lots of testing he has a YouTube channel where he does testing. Close range the scope does well but trying to see bullet trace at distance is very tough. I bought one and did testing with it myself. For $550.00 it’s a good scope but don’t expect high end performance.

I'd never expect high end performance out of a $550.00 scope. Thanks for your reply.

If you are looking around in the scope immediately after recoil to see your bullet trace and spot where you missed then you probably aren’t following thru with your shot correctly. Focus solely on the target and properly follow thru on your shot then you probably won’t have to worry about looking for bullet trace because you’ll have less misses ;)

Best way to see bullet trace is to have a second person spotting directly behind you. Let them watch and call the impact. The shooter should only focus on maintaining proper form and follow thru.
