What's the gun situation like in Oregon?

We had already decided to move somewhere cooler and with less people after our daughter graduates high school in a few years but now with the latest here in Kalifornia it has really sealed the deal. We were up Oregon a week ago on vacation. We stopped in McMinnville to see the Spruce Goose and I really liked the area just west of there. I hear all sorts of things about Oregon and guns both good, bad and otherwise, so what's real scoop? Also are there many/any 600-1000 yard ranges in northern Oregon? Suppressor friendly?

I moved from CA to OR three years ago and love it!. I am on the Coast as I have had enough heat to last a lifetime. There are three 1000 yard ranges that I know of in Oregon, several more in Washington state. The Oregon ranges are Douglas Ridge Gun Club, Eagle Creek, COSSA Range, Bend, one small private land range in Vale at the eastern edge of the state. The closest Washington range seems to be Tri-Cities Gun Club near West Richmond, WA. All very nice folks. Competition generally runs from April through October. Winters are wet and cold so that is the time for indoor small bore. In March many of us make the pilgrimage to Sacramento Valley Gun Club for March Madness Long Range matches (600 miles one way).
Suppressors are welcome state wide. Hunting and fishing are excellent.
The state politics are running fairly middle of the road but the Portland population dictates most important issues for the state and they are undeniably Blue from where I sit. Firearm legislation is on the rise. Recently transfers between two OR residents now require an FFL (though more than one Sheriff said they were not going to enforce that rule). No waiting period, lots of firearms for sale, good gun shops and a fair number of good gunsmiths. I know of a great one for competitive rifle people if you need one (though I still try and give my old friends in CA some business).
Employment opportunities vary with local. Obviously the closer to Portland you are the more jobs are available. Lots of retired folks from California up here. Many trying to bring their politics with them. Heavy resistance by the locals and those of us who don't want another CA Annex.
Housing prices are much more reasonable (so far) but rising but you will get much more for your money here.
Hope this helps!

I know this is subjective, but what's the gut feeling on gun laws getting worse there?

The rhetoric has died down some lately and the only real major change is the FFL requirement for transfers but I have no problem with that one. There are a number of folks with Oakland and L.A. area codes up here trying to buy guns off Armslist cheap and quick and don't want anything to do with an FFL. Avoid those like the plague. No point in arming the criminal element easily.
Everyone here is a firearms owner. Everyone here shoots and hunts. Many compete in one form or another. I am not worried at the moment.

"Everyone here is a gun owner....." I assume You are not talking about the Portland area?

Portland reminds me of whacky Cali every time I visit. Very Liberal.

For 600 yard ranges in the area, add Tri-county gun club in Sherwood, OR.

Remember that OR is governed by the same party that has run California into the ground. Any silly law you see down south, you will see in Oregon in a matter of years.

Kate Brown is the current Gov and expected to be elected for another 4 years. She has made it clear she will go after guns the same way California has. Portland, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene and even Bend are liberal strongholds and it will only get worse. Even Medford is attracting liberals from down south and losing ground. If you are interested in a gun friendly state, you might want to reconsider your choice in Oregon.

Well that's not encouraging. My wife likes the coast, I like the mountains and farm land. We were hoping to sort of have a similar geographic situation as California where you be at the coast or the mountains in a relatively short trip. I don't think I can sell my wife on being a whole state or 2 inland from the ocean. Neither of us like the mass of people or the heat in California. And of course we're rock bottom politically and socially in this stool hole of a state. We have a few years to wait but at the same time I'd like to narrow it down in case we decide to buy property and build.
Washington?

The problem with Portland is the same as Los Angeles or San Fransisco is with California. They have enough vote to screw up the hole state

Washington State is no better. We just suffered a referendum to prohibit transfers of firearms without going through an FFL. In the same law, they managed total firearms registration through maintained records of all transfers.

It will only take a generation or two and we will have complete registration of every firearm in Washington. King County and the surrounding megalopolis vote quite liberal and we will suffer for it.

I‘ve lived in Seattle for 35 years, and when I wrote out a reply to your inquiry, it just ended up sounding like a rant so I will spare you that. I will say I do have a problem with having to involve an FFL every time a gun changes hands. If I want to do barrel work for a friend and he leaves his rifle with me that is a felony. It causes many other problems as well, too many for me to type out, and of course we are no safer. The bad guys don’t care about your silly law. Just don’t expect it to be much different politically up here in WA or OR. This place is getting more and more screwed up every day that goes by.

The liberal cancer is spreading north from the peoples republic of Kalifornia to Oregon.
In their quest on trashing our Constitution starting with the 2nd Amendment. Remember, liberalism is a mind disease. Those are the kind of people who have nothing between their ears but a blood clot. They believe knives & forks make people fat. Their is a place for liberalism only they haven't dug it yet.

wont be a state left without the same kind of laws as in California in 10 years. The political climate is going to dictate what this so called free nation will turn into. you can postpone it by moving to a more rural and less populated state ie: wyo, s.d ,n.d ,az but the same liberal thinking is moving in everywhere. Here in Colorado this will be the next california, you can see it happening more every year. If you want to change things your going to have to protest in huge numbers like the sniveling liberals do about every subject that comes along. take to the streets like they do, it's working for them, only in america does a minority of people cry loud enough and the politicians think lets not offended them ,let them have what they want. God help the land of the FREE.

Not to mention the sin tax past recently that pushed precise shooter and other vendors out of the city limits. It's the influx out people to the city that is causing problems. So my official response is, "it's terrible here, you should stay in California". ;D

My wife and I are constantly looking for a place to move outside of Seattle city limits. Unfortunately so many other people are having that same idea it's getting too difficult to find something affordable in a desirable location.

And the reason for this is

I moved from southern illinois to SW Idaho in summer of 1978 because of the increased social/nazi nature of the governmental structure.
I have not regretted it for a minute. 71% +/- of the state ground is federal or state owned, so you are pretty much free to camp, etc as you please.
It, along with Montana, Utah, and Wyoming are pretty much the last bastions of Constitutional based government.

All of our land is government owned!
