What's everyones favorite solvent and oil these days?

Hi all,

I have been using Shooters Choice MC#7 solvent for quite some time as well as their brand of gun oil. However, I recently was killing time in the garage and read a lot about Butch's Bore Shine while I was reading the newest Lyman Reloading Manual. Sounds like a great product but I don't personally know anyone that's using it.

What do you guys recommend these days? Also, what bolt grease is the latest and greatest? I want to make sure whatever solvent I get is capable of removing all types of fouling including copper.

Thanks,
Jordan

Shortly after I switched to Butch`s copper solvent, a shooting friend brought me some of the bore foam choices to try. I was quite surprised how well they worked. A borescope confirmed the results. Have not brushed a bore since....some 4 or 5 years ago.

I do not clean my F-Class rifles until we are done with our club matches which often run into December.

When we do stop for the winter, I clean with the bore foam, wipe clean, then use my homemade Ed`s Red solution to protect the bores until we start up again in April. The residual ATF does the same job as the more expensive oils that cost so much more and needs to be repurchased much more often.

A gallon of Ed`s Red lasts a long time.

Regards,

Scott

I have been using KG12 for 3 years now, and the product is non ammonia-based and it works as well a sweets in removing copper. I use there carbon remover for my general cleaning
KG-12 copper remover will not turn patches blue-green when it removes copper fouling. The solution itself is yellow, and when it removes copper, the yellow patch will turn a little darker yellow-brownish tint. They make a range of products including a liquid bore polish similar to JBs.

I use montana copper killer and butch's/ They both work real good, Havent tried bore foam, who makes it. I use marvel mystery oil and have never had a bore rust yet,and its cheap.

For normal cleaning I use 4-5 soaking patches with Butch's or Shooters Choice to get the black soot out. This is prelim, and it doesn't seem to matter much what I use ...

Then I use WipeOut bore foam, two applications in 25 minutes, followed by a 3-hour soak. Note -- the other brands are NOT the same.

I find WipeOut very effective -- if you have the time to wait. I have a couple 3-groove barrels that pretty much never need brushing.

If there are carbon problems, I use Carb-out, but it is messy.
For stubborn Copper, KG12 (first choice) or 50BMG from MT Xtreme.

For long-term storage of barrels, I use wet patches with Eezox. I've tried Kroil. It has its place, but I prefer Eezox for anti-corrosion use.

I caution users regarding Bore-Tech Eliminator. Make sure you get it all out. If you store your barrels muzzle up in the safe, we've found that Eliminator residues get gummy and if they run down into the bolt and trigger recess the Eliminator will rust stuff (like triggers, firing pins) very quickly.

Howdy !

With today's many great custom barrels/ barrel makers, heck... just about any solvent will work.

Over the years, I went from using Hoppe's No.9 on my rifles, to ltd use of Sweets; to "Butche's Bore Shine". Most recent years, I used Tom Meredith's "TM" solution, and treated bore after-wards w/ Montana Extreme "Bore Conditioner".

For revolver cleaning, I went from Hoppe's No. 9 to "Breakfree"; and finding MIL armourers where
I worked using it on 20MM Vulcan cannon barrels on F-16s. The " Vulcan" is, after all.... a revolver.

My last couple stainless barrel (one factory, one custom ), I have not had to even use a brush.
The factory barrel is on a Marlin M336 XLR in .35 Rem. To clean its deep " Ballard-type" rifling, I found that Gun-Slick " Foaming Bore Cleaner " really got the job done.

Most guys won't need something as potent as "Sweets", unless they are having some sort of cleaning "problem".

Again, with a good/great barrel; all proven solvents will work.

With regards,
357Mag

Im with 357. with the quality of the barrels nowa days it does not take much to clean a barrel, having a bore scope helps on making a choice for what you like. When I lived up north I cleaned my rifles in the basment of my house and got to the point that I hated to use the strong amonia based cleaners. I tested a bunch until I found TM and Bore tech Eleminator. Very very seldom do I need to use a brush.
Forum Boss mentioned that Eleminator could cause rapid rusting, I have not had that happen even down here in the south. The reason is that I clean everything up before I put the rifle away and give the bore a light coat of oil before it goes back into the safe. I might have to keep an eye on that, now that someone mentioned it. Thanks Boss. It wont change my choice but Ill be sure to take note.

Scott.
I did a test at Spirit of America match this year and did not clean my 308 Palma Rifle the whole time I was there. 273 rounds. Last match at 1000 yards was sub X ring in elevation. Just a whole lot wider ; ) Im not sure I would do that with a 6.5X284 or hot rod 6mm, good ole 308 did just fine this way. Hurray.. less cleaning, more shooting.

Bore scope tells all when cleaning.

Not to bust the thread but does anybody use Warthog1134? So far I use brake cleaner followed up with JB bore paste for bore prep. and use Type F ATF for oil and high pressure bearing grease for the bolt lugs, camming sufaces and threads.

Wow, the comment regarding Bore Tech Eliminator causing rusting freaks me out...considering I placed an order for a 16oz ($24.99) bottle last night :o. I thought it sounded like the best choice after reading a BUNCH of reviews. If I could make the purchase all over again, I would probably go with Montana Extreme Bore Solvent.

I really wanted a "one stop shop" solvent and Bore Tech Eliminator and Montana Extreme Bore Solvent sounded like the best two on the market after my research. I decided for the Bore Tech because it was amonia free and could be used indoors without strong odor.

Most of the solvents used do a pretty good job. But after using them for a while you should bore scope those barrels. Carbon build up is a killer .
If i find some after a while i use IOSSo bore paste and some iosso oil.

Jordag1102,

don't fret over the Bore Tech Eliminator.... it works great and cleans barrels quickly. Just use a good boreguide and run a couple dry patches down the barrel after cleaning like your supposed to. That is probably one product as mentioned to not leave soaking in a vertical barrel as it can get a little gummy if not removed.

Soak the barrel with a couple wet patches and run a wet nylon brush 10 times to break everything up- wait a few minutes- then clean out the crud with a couple more wet patches then dry.

Thanks for the added information on Bore Tech Eliminator. Sounds like KG12 and Montana Extreme are two other close and equal competitors but I feel confident about my purchase after reading more of your responses. I'm sure they all work great and I've always been very satisfied with my Shooters Choice MC#7 with Sweets 7.62 for added copper removal, but I am excited to try something new.

So what about gun oil? I've still got some Shooters Choice I'm using up that I've always been happy with but I'm interested in the Montana Extreme gun oil as well as Eezox (spelling?). I know I want something teflon free. Thoughts?

Re Oils -- there are better products for most components of a match rifle

In-bore (long-term storage) -- Eezox
Outside of gun and bolt exterior -- Eezox or Corrosion-X
Bolt Lugs and Camming surfaces -- Quality Grease (I use the Sinclair red stuff, mainly so you can see if it's in place.)
Trigger mechanism -- Follow Mfg's directions. For a Jewell, no lube recommended. When it gets dirty, flush with lighter fluid. You can use Eezox on the outside of the trigger housing.
Firing Pin and spring -- Some guys use grease on the spring. I'm undecided there.

I had a bunch of poeple at the IBS 1K nationals, people who I trust a whole bunch, tell me about "Witches Brew". I had never heard of it. These guys SWEAR by it. Just soak a bronze brush in it and make a half dozen passes. I'm told it is the best out there for carbon and copper.

I have not yet got around to buying any yet.....but I plan to.

Unless there is some one GIVING AWAY FREE SAMPLES!!! ;)

Witch's Brew from Holland. I have been using KG-1 for cleaning carbon. I had no doubt it was doing it's job to the fullest (I don't have a bore scope) until I ran into some problems that I won't go into. A guy named Rich told me to try Witch's Brew as my barrel had to be carbon fouled to be causing the problems that I was having. I reluctantly bought some and tried it. I am glad I did. I have not re-checked the results yet but in initial testing, velocity stabilized, pressure went away, and groups shrunk. Bore was noticeably smoother with jag and patch after using the "Brew". I honestly thought I was getting my barrel clean with what I was using before, I could let the bore soak after I thought it was clean and when I patched it out, the patches came out just as clean as they went in. I was wrong.

Butch's Bore Shine. Butch's oil, Sweet's 7.62, and JB Bore Cleaning Compound [not the polish]. Grease? That green or red stuff in a little tube that you push out the end.
