Whats after 30-06?

Hello. So what is the popular cartridge around here that comes in more powerful then 30-06, and less powerful then 300 win mag?
What are the options
Or is the winner 300win mag..i just dont like the belted case.yuck! Its an ugly duckling haha

I Progressed from, a .30-06 to, a .270 Weatherby to, a .338 Win Mag then Back again, to, a .270 WSM .
The .270 WSM just "Stomp's" chit with, a 140 Berg Classic hunter @ close to,.. 3,200 FPS ( and NO Belt ).
Reasonable Recoil and even BETTER,.. if Braked ! My Last Rifle was, a T-3 Lite ( NON - Fluted ) SS Tikka Lefty in .270 WSM ( Just gave it to, my grandson during the Summer and he killed, a Buck Antelope with it, in October ).
It's Braked Now and he can Shoot it, All Day Long with,. NO, problem at 14 y/o.
IF, you want, a .30 Magnum go with the .300 WSM, as VERY Accurate Cartridge, JUST Be sure to, put a Brake on, it !
Tikka's, are very Light and the Recoil from, the .300 WSM can Be, fierce,.. off the Bench.
PS; I shoot, a 6.5 Creed, Now, in another, Braked Tikka, 24" SS, Lefty ( It's a Blast with, very, LOW Recoil ! )

What about 338 Lapua? Seems to me it answers just about everything, including the lighter wallet, and free work outs.

I think the 300 short mags slot between 30-06 and 300wm. 300saum / 300wsm, however you quickly get to a series of chamberings for special purposes; IE short action coming close to 300wm, they both get easier with a long action where you could seat bullets out.

Once you're at a magnum action in case length, the RUM or 300-Lapua like cartridges come up, but that's removing the belt and going full throttle, not really slotting between the -06 and win mag.

I chose to 'modernize' the 30-06 and Taylor for 190+ bullets; modern powders, it's no slouch. Could go AI on the -06 and save some trimming.

For Me, personally, If I were "building", a New Hunting Rifle, Today,.. 7 SAUM, 24" w/ 168's going, 3,000+ FPS !
Or, maybe, a 7 PRC, w/ 175 gr. Elite Hunters or 184 gr. Hybrids ( My son, really LIKES, his 7 PRC ! ).
The 6.5 and 7 PRC's have, a LOT of,.. New Followers, especially with, All the ADG Brass, available for Them.

In this part of the world, the 7mm Magnum is considered the upgrade from 270. Maybe even the new 7mm Back Country, if reloading ain't your thing.

300 wsm is the commercial answer in 30 cal but its basically as powerful as a 300 win mag. 300 rcm or saum would be abit lighter and more in between but hard find brass and ammo
Some kind of improved 30-06 case like a ackely or better yet the 30 gibbs would be a custom step up

338-06 or 35 whelen gets more bullet out of that case. More ft lbs. not sure what you are looking for?

7 mags would get you more ballistic performance with not too much more recoil. Somewhat similar weight bullets 150-180 gr possibly. Similar speeds to maybe faster velocity depending.

I have always been an ‘06 fan. When I was growing up in the 1950’s, about the only rifles anyone owned was a 30/30, a 270, or a 30/06.

If a wife hunted, she got a 243. So did the kids. When the kids got bigger, they got a real rifle. An ‘06.

With todays powders, and todays bullets, it’s sometimes difficult thinking of needing anything else in the Western Hemisphere.

But, of course, it’s an antiquated relic from a bygone era. Something for old guys to remanence about as they ponder the same fate.

NOT!!;)

Hard to go past .280AI and it is now a “Thing” and you can readily get brass and ammo, you can use 280 Rem, fire and presto, .280AI cases and I suppose a touch cheaper than Factory .280AI from Nosler.
Just touching on the 7 Rem Mag without the belt and doing it with less powder.
Just build on your old long action and away you go.
If recoil is not an issue than perhaps a .338-06. An easy cartridge to make just by necking up, good for any large game.
I have a .338 Federal that just hammers Dem lil’ Piggies with a case full of Varget & 200gr Hornady’s lumbering along at 2’600fps.

I ve heard Ron Spomer outdoors do an episode about the 270. He said the same thing..i always thought the 270 is kind of a womans hunting cartridge..hahaha..gentle and sleek for her pleasure but im looking for that .30 cal slam.
I dont need a 300ultra mag..i dont even need a 300win mag..
But is there a .30 cal cartridge that fills the power level between the 30-06 and 300win mag
Im not sure what it would be.
If the 30-06 has a case capacity of 68gr.
300win mag is approximately 91gr of case capacity.
What 30cal case holds about 80gr of case capacity. Is there one

And no way an i getting involved with a 338..that has to be the most expensive bullet made..and i dont live near anything i need a 338 to put down.

Look up the German 8mm X 68mm Shuler. I have one on a 98. Top loads will out horsepower the Rem 8Mag, or can be throttled down to just over the 30-06. And, there are a nice selection of bullet weights out there.

Oh, yes, no stinking belt!
