Whats a good borescope?

The screen/device may be improved, but the resolution of the camera isn't better, according to Lyman. I don't have a gen one display to look at, so can't really speak to that. The resolution of the device/camera itself is the same, they may have had a really poor quality display on gen1 and went to a less-poor quality on gen2, but if the camera is only 320x240, that's the best you're gonna get on the display.

The person I spoke with indicated the improvements were for reliability, quality of image (not resolution, and not really sure what was tweaked, CS didn't make it clear), and usability (folding stand). Not sure why they didn't go for higher resolution, perhaps a component price/supply issue.

@ormandj

Seems odd that the improved version wouldn't really be improved beyond the display. So I decided to test the original unit vs the "new improved screen resolution" unit.

As noted in the previous posts and in the Lyman documentation - both original and improved models display images at 320x240. That doesn't necessarily mean the image quality is the same? The new improved version has higher dpi than the original which increases image quality. The Lyman documentation doesn't give you this spec so one may assume the 320x240 image size/quality between the units is the same.

Here are images captured onto the SD card of the same (old) barrel:

New improved unit - captured image on SD card is 320x240 @ 96dpi @ no compression:

Original unit - captured image on SD card is 320x240 @ 72dpi @ 1.625 compressed bits/pixel:

These are my test results. Just thought I'd share.

The .216" diameter of the camera on the Lyman scope wasn't small enough to work in my .172" caliber barrels. While the initial cost was pretty high, I haven't regretted the expense and consider it a very good investment. I finally broke down and purchased the angled eyepiece. I'm sorry I didn't buy it many years ago.

You also have to compare the dpi of the image itself that is captured within the 320x240 frame. The Lyman documentation doesn't give you this speci so one may assume the 320x240 image size/quality between the units.
