Seems odd that the improved version wouldn't really be improved beyond the display. So I decided to test the original unit vs the "new improved resolution" unit.
As noted in the previous posts and in the Lyman documentation - both original and improved models display images at 320x240. That doesn't necessarily mean the image quality is the same. You also have to compare the dpi of the image itself that is captured within the 320x240 frame. The Lyman documentation doesn't give you this speci so one may assume the 320x240 image size/quality between the units.
Here are images captured onto the SD card of the same (old) barrel:
