Does anyone have any good borescope photos from barrels with different types of fouling, carbon rings etc? I have a borescope borrowed but really dont know what to look for.

Ben: Although I do have a Hawkeye borescope, I do not have the camera capable attachments. Attached pics are from the Gradient Lens ads that they were running in "Precision Shooting"( now "gone"), and "Varmint Hunter" magazines.
First pic is copper fouling. Second is a throat that is in really bad shape, so worn that you can see holes where chunks of steel have been torn out, they quickly fill with copper making cleaning a longer job. Third pic is the typical cross reamer tool marks left by the reamers. Fourth is firecracking at the front of the chamber, where the mouth of the case would be located. As firecracking progresses it will extend further into the leade and throat areas. Fifth picture is what we see with a Krieger, Bartlein, Hart, etc. hand-lapped barrels.
Not shown (unfortunately) is a bore that is heavily carbon fouled, ( looks like the tops of the lands & the grooves were painted with heavy black paint), and barrel pitting that will look like someone took a center punch & hammered small holes in the bore. I see some of this with the improper use of cleaning solvents, mixing solvents, and leaving the bore wet with corrosive solvents for too long of a time.

Ok, thanks. Would be nice to know if the dreaded carbon ring is a true ring or more of an "area"

Great illustration by dmoran. I know some will disagree (from previous posts), but the illustration also shows why I let my brass lengths grow/ stretch until they are long enough to be trimmed only .010" to .005" shorter than chamber length. Case lengths are measured after every sizing & the exact chamber length is measured and recorded for each chamber.
The area shown in blue, filled with the carbon ring, never happens in my chambers, since the area where carbon will accumulate is covered and protected by the brass case. No place for the carbon to buildup.
Bottom line: I never have a carbon ring in any of my chambers.

+1 on fdshuster's comments. We practice the same discipline of sizing and trimming for the reasons and benefits he has stated.
liseo: In my opinion, it depends on the chamber & cartridge you are using. If it would be a 220 Swift, for example, that has a record of case stretching, then I'd not let the case mouth get any closer than .010".
243, 22-250, 223 with near maximum loads, etc. are other examples of cases that will require frequent trimming.
If it's a 6ppc, 6BR, etc. with a tight fitting chamber and the cartridge has a record of very little if any case stretching, then I would use .005" as the minimum clearance. I seldom have to trim my ppc & BR cases, maybe every fifth or sixth sizing & then I'm only taking off .002" to .004".
When I had 243's and 22-250's I was trimming almost after every sizing and that was with moderate loads and bumping the shoulders back a maximum of .002".
