What would you build on a spare Rem 30-06 action for moose

I would keep it as is. Work up a good load with a 200grn Nosler Accubond. But if you must rebarrel, I would go with the 35 Whelen.

280AI, flat shooting, plenty energy for moose, great projectile selection if you reload. No need for a 338cal or 35cal for moose.

Years ago a good brush/moose gun was always a bigger bore,.. nowadays projectile selection dictates how good of a brush gun it is and not necessarily what cartridge it's chambered for.

In the following order?:
30-06 but rebarrel and set up for the Nosler 200 grain partition.
9.3x64
35 Whelen (standard NOT improved)

The 338-06 would be a choice but only with the 200 or 225 grain bullets. The 06 case can't push the 250s fast enough to expand.

A custom build is fine, but there really isn't much wrong with the standard 30-06.

As always YMMV.

Screw the 250s! Those require a 1-9 ROT to stabilize and THAT would require a custom barrel!! I tried that when you were a teenager!!

I'd do the 35 Whelen, that is if I already had something to fill the 30-06 gap as an all around chambering. (something like a 7mmRM, 300WM, 300WSM 30-06, 270, 280). The 35 would give you a big bore hitter for closer ranges and bullets designed for the velocities. Otherwise, I'd keep it as a 30-06.

My best friend has a Remington 700 cdl sf limited 30-06 that he uses as a back up for moose. He shot my custom this weekend and now wants to get a build started. I have a few ideas i like but wondering what you would do with a spare action?

The standard '06 is a stone dead killer as-is. Load it with partitions or a bonded bullet and watch things stop happening fast.

I would do a 338-06 because I have regretted getting rid of that barrel I had on a Savage. In addition to extra horsepower it was very accurate. Got my first and only moose with it in Newfoundland; the Hornady Interlock mushed his internals.
