6x45 with 80gr Barnes TTSX. Fleabite recoil (about half the powder of a .243 Win), excellent penetration on medium game, feeds beautifully from standard magazines. Abundant, quality, low-cost brass. Lighter bullets (~70gr) great for practice, varmints, etc. Long barrel life.
We need one more, a 25 Creedmoor. Wait, I already have one - my 250 Ackley Improved. Ol' P.O. was dead on there - long ago.260
We really do have enough creedmoor's
I've been working with the 6.5x55 Ackley on a new F Open rifle. So far it's been one of the easiest cartridges I've ever worked with. It would make an incredible deer cartridge and with the 156 Berger it's definitely an elk rifle too. Mild recoil and easy to shoot. 7.5" twist seems to just shoot everything I put through it. My next hunting rifle will definitely be chambered in it.
A few guys have recommended the 6x45. That's also a sweet little cartridge. A whole opposite end of the power spectrum but it definitely gets the job done. I've killed a few deer with that round. 95 Partition's at 2600 will have full penetration on heart/lung shots and puts a huge hole in the vitals. In the freezer every time. And it is possibly the most enjoyable cartridge I've ever shot.
Hey guys I'm looking for thoughts and advise based off experience for a clambering geared towards deer for my wife. I'm just about ready to start compiling components yet I don't even have my starting point. I'm considering the 260 rem or 6.5creedmoor. I have my no experience with either cartridge. I am a avid handloader so once components are purchased ammo won't be an issue. I'm leaning toward the creed because brass seems to be everywhere right now. I cant see recoil mattering much between the 2, or am I wrong? I'm also thinking about a 8twist.
A buddy is going after pronghorn in NE Nevada today with a 25-06. His load is 80-gr TTSX ahead of RL-16 @3400 fps and 1/2 MOA. He started out experimenting with light monolithic bullets in various calibers, seeking a low-recoil load for his wife, and fell in love with the TSX line across the board for their dramatic efficacy on game and surprising accuracy. He himself has a bad shoulder, so lighter recoil is a family thing. His "heavy" load for big deer and elk is 270 WSM pushing a 95 or 110 TTSX.25-06 could be good. Low recoil nice ballistics and hits deer like a lightning strike.
Old jazz musician joke: The ideal wife is a deaf-and-dumb nymphomaniac with a licquor store. My buddy built his wife a large house--in which she and her boyfriend now reside.??!@#!!!
A nice custom centerfire much easier on bank account...
You can load it much slower than that if desired with H4895, down to 60% of max per Hodgdon. Why not a 308. You don't have to shoot at 2850 fps. Can load to 2650-2850 fps.
How about a 6.5x57 or 6.5x257r? I have plenty of roberts brass and it could be a fun project.
If she is fine with the Roberts recoil you are golden for a deer rifle ...just pick out what you want and when you refer to the gun call it "Our gun "...like you both had a say in it. Win/Win![]()
