What is your recoil limit?

When I was working, my 458 Lott was about as much as I could handle and get off more than one shot in a timely manner (like to save my butt). Toted that rifle along every year, even after I switched to a 450/ 3 1/4 double (and that one ended up saving my behind more than the Lott).

Shooting a 4 Bore (once) was the most recoil I have experienced. Not doing that again.

Now my recoil tolerance is much less. My designed 338 is about all I want to shoot now. And ..... I don't shoot it very much when I do.

Aaaah ...... when you get old, you start turning into a wuss

If we are talking pleasure and comfort then I tend to consider the entire shooting experience. After shooting 3Gun for a bit, I came to personal conclusion that the blast from a Muzzle Brakes might be worst then the recoil.

For me the answer is Suppressors Suppressors Suppressors, with micro calibers being second.

Grendel variant - nothing says Ouch like 31gr of powder :)
.223 = adult .22LR Take one along each range trip just to shoot the clothes pins off the target as wind down.
.222 = Smooth as a glass of velvety Port.
Fireball/Vartarg = Each shot makes you smile like hearing a baby laugh... adorable!

Shotguns - 12ga pump. You don't notice the recoil as much while your focused on racking it fast.

I’ve noticed over all these years of shooting.223 and 6BR, I’ve become quite spoiled with tolerating excessive recoil. I’m reminded quickly when I go to shoot my 308 or ‘06! Lol Those two are probably my limit these days for accurate shooting and enjoying longer strings of fire. What is your limit for recoil when shooting for fun?
6-BR and here’s why

Firing a handgun one handed bullseye style, I have not found a limit, this includes 50AE, TC 30-30 etc. For rifle I discovered that since shoulder surgery, the but-plate on my Ruger #1 in 45-70 aligns perfectly with one of the screws in my shoulder. So I limit myself to 10 or so mid power rounds, the rest are 300 cast, 14.5 of Trail Boss.
That'll make you pee down your leg!

If it is something cool and unusual, my limit is loosening the fillings in my teeth. For a few shots, anyway. I've seen the .577 Tyrannosaur videos - I might be up for ONE pull of the trigger.

Otherwise, .338 Win Mag with 275 gr. Speers is my limit.

Fatelvis,
I can manage the recoil of just about anything if need be to work up loads or sighting in but setup for me and the rifle needs to be done correctly. I have a 1886 chambered in 45/70 it’s fairly easy to shoot and enjoyable but it’s heavy, I have a H&R buffalo classic also in 45/70 that’s no fun at all. My personal limit for enjoyable fun shooting stops about 7mm-08 and much prefer a 6br or even a little .22 Hornet. I know a lot of “Men” that claim recoil don’t bother them at all!….. but there groups show differently!…

The 26-06 with 85gr is my upper limit, I THINK. I just restocked it and need to shoot it. Guess I'll find out if I can handle it. The 300WM and 270 is way, way back in the safe. I really like the little stuff 17 Hornady Hornet, 222 R and my favorite low recoil rifle 17HMR, no recoil, no reloading and just right for Sage Rats or gophers. I'm a little scared of the falling block (Japanese Win) with the curved but plate, so I bought a CZ 17HMR, just in case.
When your tired of your Japanese 1885 I’ll buy it ;)

Well as you said @fatelvis you can get spoiled shooting lesser rounds. Today I went shooting taking my PPC and BR rifles. Great to shoot, but since moose season is only a couple months away I also took my 30/378 along to check the zero. I hunt with this rifle with no brake as the blast is just too much for my ears. Well the bad habits I got shooting the PPC's and BR's got straightening out very fast shooting this beast. This is the max most I can take for recoil ( 200 gr Part at 3275 ft/sec) and in all honesty probably too much. Just brutal.
Murray,
I have a .338-.378 in a Accumark!… it’s no fun to shoot with or without the brake, with the brake the concussion is overwhelming and without the brake the recoil is overwhelming on a bench or prone, standing not bad but I didn’t buy it for close range work. I haven’t checked it for zero in years I just assumed it’s on and it is,….. thank goodness because with 250’s and 300’s it’s absolutely not fun!

Good God Wayne. Knowing what a 30/378 unbraked is like, I shiver at the thought of a 33/378
I’ve owned both and shooting heavies there both bad buddy. I started shooting br in 09 by 2010 I chambered up a 6brx and haven’t enjoyed recoil since. But for elk hunting I still like the .300wm on up to the heavy .338’s
Like you I don’t like hunting with a brake so they just don’t get shot much anymore
