What is your recoil limit?

I’ve shot a few magnums over time, nothing too bothersome. Seems like the 340 Weatherby might have been a little more stout.

Load development on a 6-7 lb 300 WSM broke me of wanting to shoot any light weight magnum. I could control it and make it shoot. But after shooting my 16lb 260…. The WSM went down the road. I don’t miss it at all. I’ve done a 7mm RM and a 300 WM load development for friends recently, they were 10 lb rifles, not bad at all.

I put 40 rounds through my dad's 460 Weatherby at one session, Pain-wise recoil doesn't bother me but it messed up my shoulder for a few weeks and limited my mobility. We shot my dads 378 weatherby so much that we cracked the stock on it, We probably put over 700 rounds through that rifle.

Over the last couple of years I have parted ways with of my "kickers". I sent my .375 H&H and 9,3x62 down the road along with my .350 Remington 673. I still have a sub 5 pound .45/70 carbine but I also have a couple of bullet molds and an 8 pound jug of Unique. Any more I hunt with a .270 Winchester or a .308 Winchester at the upper end.

I shoot black powder cartridge, 45-90, 80 grains black powder. 530 grain bullet. I use a kick killer pad on the rifle and a shoulder pad. Sitting on a stool and shooting off of cross sicks, 100-125 shots is about the limit. Rifle is a 10lb Winchester Hiwall.

At home, it's a Winchester 52, 22lr

It depends on how the rifle is built, a 30-06 in a poor fitting stock and a steel butt plate is awful.
My custom 11 pound 450 Marlon bolt rifle with 500 grain loads and recoil reducing pads and weights is stiff prone or off the bench but fine from field positions.

The Smith did his job, the math was right so it sighted in very quickly off the bench, maybe 20 rounds.

I only practice off hand or other field positions and never fired more than 10 rounds in a session.

I shoot several rifles from a bench rest. 223, 6mm BR, 6,5 creedmoor. I am 88 years old and have two really bad shoulders that they want to replace. That ain't gonna happen. I still get to the range once a week and shoot at least about 100 rounds or more. All have breaks on them. I have two more rifles I shoot regularly but for the love of me, I can.t remember them off hand. That's what happens when you are older than dirt. I can't shoot anything heavier then these but I can shoot as many as I like with not trouble. OI sometimes spent 3 or 4 hours at the range just burning up powder and bullets. It's expensive but what else am going to spend my money on.

Guess I'd have to say around twenty - thirty rounds from a .338 Lapua Sniper Rifle .
Got the chance to do a full magazine from a Barrett , and was pleased to have checked that off my "Bucket List". No thoughts on ever repeating that abuse .

Be nice if MI opened everything up to rifles like we did in IN.
Agree. There are so many work arounds to the shotgun rules that they should just allow rifles, guys use high power muzzleloaders, 350 legend, etc.

There was a time, about 40 years ago, that I couldn’t understand why everyone said a .300 Win Mag had terrible recoil. I thought it was fairly mild. That was along with sending lots of Elmer Keith’s .44 Magnum max load of 2400 with 240 grain bullets downrange in one session. Now, having discovered tendonitis, arthritis, (anything “itis” is bad), and some eye problems I really like .223’s and 9mm. I still shoot my handguns a lot but with milder loads. Myself and the brass last longer that way.

338 LM I was OK with, but very comfortable with .308 all day.

I tried 30-06, 300WM, 7mm mag, I didn't like 'em

I'm in the minority here. I own a 10 bore double rifle I shoot a couple times a month 6-8 rounds. I also have a 550 Gibbs that I shoot every now and then. I've been blessed to hunt Africa three times, so I learned how to handle big bore rifles. You got to roll with the recoil, or hurt yourself. I also shot one of Ken (?) Owens doubles chambered for the four bore. Couldn't believe the recoil the first shot, so I fired the other barrel about 30 seconds later. Rifle weighed 24 pounds empty. I also got to fire a Butch Searcy's fine four bore doubles at the SHOT Show one year. 18 pounds is too light for a four.
This week all I've shot big is my Shiloh Sharps 50-90. Two shots off the bench to set my new MVA Vernier Tang Sight at 200. Twelve pounds is about right.

take care all,

ISS

I stop at 505 Gibbs, shot a 550 Gibbs wildcat one time and I thought a grenade had gone off by week my hands......I think it belonged to ISS....

I owned a 500NE double for a long time. Shot a few 577 doubles they were fun. The 577 650gr Express load is very pleasant to shoot, the full 577 750gr Nitro Express load is definitely stout but doable. At that time I would have loved to own a 577 double. I took one shot out of a wild cat 600 bolt gun that was way too light. That was ugly..

I teach long range shooting (600 yds) at our gun club. We open it up to the public 1 day a week to invite new shooters that want to be qualified.

One guy showed up with a .338 Lapua, in a PRC chassis. He equipped the gun with a suppressor and no brake.

Now this guy was about 5'6" and about 130 pounds.

The first shot nearly knocked him off the chair. The third shot the recoil of the gun came back and the cheek rest cut him in the ear.

I was flinching every time he pulled the trigger.

I didn't shoot it but I didn't want to either....

He didn't complete the qualification, he gave up after about 10 rounds and a band aid on his ear.

30BR, only reason I shoot is because I can tighten up the front rest and it gets it to a manageable recoil! Probably will sell after the UBR NATIONALS, when it places it the top 10 it'll be HOT! LOL

I’m not sure what my limit really is but I can say is after shooting my fairly heavy 6.5cm for a year I don’t like shooting anything with more recoil than that.

30-06 lighter weight unbraked is enough for me. I sometimes shoot steel without a spotter so max recoil is whatever allows me to easily spot shots at 300-600 yards through the scope. That seems to be a 308 with a 26" heavy Palma barrel and a brake. A braked 6 Creedmoor with a varmint barrel is pure pleasure.
