What is your powder $ spending breaking point?

You think powder sellers are watching this thread and will adjust prices according to what is posted here lol
Supply and demand is real. But most of the fools buying don't believe it. The same smart group who ignored the last pesidential election by not stocking up to the best of their ability. The same group with 10,000 bullets, 50 pounds of powder and 176 primers. It never ends, as a fellow shooter often says,"You can't fix stupid" . Just keep paying 50.00 plus a pound for powder and it will keep climbing at an escalating rate. Oh by the way, good pellets about .04 or a bit less each. A new spring less than 100.00 every 10,000 shots. Great option but there is a learning curve, ie work, leaves a lot not interested.

I do not buy powder online, but I believe the thrust of the question is what is your "break" point for the cost of components.

That's a good question - one that I do not have a precise answer for because it essentially comes down to what value do you place on your hobby?

Things I have done to stay active because I really enjoy the shooting sports and varmint hunting is I have re-structured my firearm selection. These days, 90%+ of my rifle shooting is with the 223 Rem bolt rifles. At $50 a pound plus tax for powder that gives me pause but I can get 280 reloads out of a pound of powder. That a fairly good amortization.

For my style of range shooting, I do not shoot rapid fire strings. Basically, a range session for me is 10 -15 rounds fired over an hour+, all cool/cold barrel shoots practicing for varmint hunting. That allows me 2 to 3 range visits a week, weather permitting. It's a great way to get out of the house and I enjoyed the pleasant environment of our ranges - on the weekdays.

Since I am at the age where I probably do not have a lot of years ahead in the shooting sports, I will probably continue no matter how bad it gets price wise until I can't.

Some of my shooting buddies have dropped out of the sport due to health and cost issues. My one buddy who doesn't reload is paying $40 / box (20 rounds) of 6.5 Creedmoor. That, I could not afford, at least for range shooting.

Keep your eyes open for deals.
In March midsouth had a free hazmat special, bought 3 8lb jugs of shooters world tactical rifle.
Total price per lb to my door was $27 a pound.
Using 25grs with a 69 sierra in my service rifle at 200yds and 24.8 with 77's at 300 yards, excellent accuracy.

My LGS is in lock-step with the highest prices I have seen anywhere online for powder, and that's accounting for hazmat fees vs our tax rate,so until they're cheaper enough to make it worth my time, I will continue to buy online. I have no choice at all when it comes to primers. Buy online or park it.

Price ???? It's like any hobby/addiction. You're going to spend what it takes to feed it. That being said I've only bought powder on-line once in the last 5 years (3 weeks ago) because it's been cheaper locally.. I think on-line "shops" are pushing the markup game a bit too far yet. The local stores are on average $5-6 cheaper per pound and about $25 cheaper per 8# (basic price) than the on-line shops. If they're making money at the lower prices and not being able to have the LARGE inventory as the on-line shops, what does that say to you.

I am always on high alert for powder, primes and bullets. I am the guy everyone loves to hate because I buy it when the price is right or I find the hard to find items. Just bought 3lbs of vihtavouri at Scheels on sale for 30 bucks a pound. I didnt need it or even use it for anything "yet" but when everyone else is out I am still rolling.

I assume in the next 5 years I will have enough supplies to last me until I die and still have ample in reserve. Every election cycle or dreamed up crisis brings another wave of price increases and supply shortages. Buy what you can when you can and don't regret it because the next time it's probably going to be worse.

Having a range less than 5 miles from the house, I have tried to do some testing once a week, being retired is a plus, most times I am only one there. I have bought several different powders lately, multiple different bullet brands, and thoroughly enjoyed testing velocity and groups.

The positive side of my shooting hobby is my bride does not know what I am spending , back in the racing years what was spent on car parts wasn't bad, What got expensive was the same amount being spent on house furnishings, didnt like sleeping with the race cars.

Sorry dont want to get off the O/P question. Just lighten the humor with laugh of day temp gone.

Have a great day guys.

Good point. I only shoot 223 - it's much less painful for me.
Yea, it enables me to shoot a lot more (cost wise) and hone my shooting skills which, as you know, are perishable. I typically shoot 5 to 6 at 100 yards then 5 to 6 at 200 yards, all off my shooting cross sticks.

Last time I bought powder it was $27 a pound to my door. Most of it is less than that per pound. Last time I bought primers they were 2.8 cents apiece and those were federal 205M. And the last time I bought some 6.5 Bergers they were approaching $40 a box. Haven’t bought brass for quite a while. I think I paid close to $.90 apiece for 6BR brass and a dollar apiece for 6.5 x 47. That’s one nice thing about Lapua it tends to last seemingly forever. Having lived through other shortages or whatever you want to call it I figured since I had a little extra coin in my pocket when Trump was in office and things were actually on sale I bought enough for the rest of my shooting/ hunting career. It’s too bad what things have become and I certainly feel for young men and women wanting to get into shooting sports. I can’t say is that I am surprised by anything that has happened or will happen. Let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
To answer the question, I think I would be done at $50 a pound.
