What is your powder $ spending breaking point?

Last time I bought powder it was $27 a pound to my door. Most of it is less than that per pound. Last time I bought primers they were 2.8 cents apiece and those were federal 205M. And the last time I bought some 6.5 Bergers they were approaching $40 a box. Haven’t bought brass for quite a while. I think I paid close to $.90 apiece for 6BR brass and a dollar apiece for 6.5 x 47. That’s one nice thing about Lapua it tends to last seemingly forever. Having lived through other shortages or whatever you want to call it I figured since I had a little extra coin in my pocket when Trump was in office and things were actually on sale I bought enough for the rest of my shooting/ hunting career. It’s too bad what things have become and I certainly feel for young men and women wanting to get into shooting sports. I can’t say is that I am surprised by anything that has happened or will happen. Let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
To answer the question, I think I would be done at $50 a pound.
I hear ya!…. I learned years ago to buy when you can get it. I still buy and have paid those prices but I don’t need to ,… I got maybe if I’m lucky 20 years left in shooting and I can easily do that.

Don't know how many of you use black powder but there is a bp substitute called Blackhorn 209.
It claims higher velocities and no cleaning between shots and act's more like a smokeless powder in performance.(which it does do) However it is now selling for between 75.00-95.00 plus hazmat for 8 0z. that is the verge of ridiculous rite there and a bridge I won't cross

Yes I heard their plant burned down so for a while it was unattainable. Now that they’re back going again I have bout it for that price but it was a full lb. I just used it in a test but I have probably 50 or 60 pounds of triple seven and it works great in my rifles. Not to mention I have more than that in Goex I just don’t like the mess.

I raced ATV's for 12 years after 14 years of IPSC. A 55 gallon drum
of race fuel cost way more then the current 8 pounders of rifle powder.
The race fuel emptied faster also. From my perspective shooting is
way more cheaper on a weekly basis and a bit safer, but I surly do
miss those knarly hill climbs and trying to fit the bars between trees
at speed. It's the sign of the times. and we are all addicts looking for
that next fix.....It is what it is !!

I am with jimmymac. I have fly rods that can keep me occupied. Actually before the last election I did my typically pre election splurge knowing from past history prices would escalate. When I was about done I was offered several deals on powder and bullets that I declined, for about one day. At my wife's urging I jumped on all of them. I figure I am good for 4 years minimum. Then I will be 80 and my airguns will be plenty of trigger time. No, nothing is for sale.
Has she got a younger sister? Asking for a friend.

I see on other forums where the members negotiate with manufacturers to get a better price with a group buy. If something like this were to happen the only issue I see would be delivery. I can think of half a dozen people here in this area that are members of AS and products could be delivered to one member and distributed??? maybe delivered to a local range of shooting club????Perhaps this is worth looking into.

I suppose my "blink" point would be in the $55-60/lb neighborhood. But that presupposes I would be scraping the bottom of the jug, as it were. Haven't needed to find that out, yet. Since shooting and reloading's mostly a hobby for me, I could do without rather than paying exorbitant prices.

I don't reload much, so my powder needs are fairly simple. Most powders I have were acquired at pre-stupid prices before the insanity began. At my current reloading rates, I've got years of powders in-hand and waiting. Locally, I've still got a handful of options at smaller shops, in my area, with powders that I can use in the sub-$40/lb range (some even under $35/lb), avoiding the hazmat since I pick them up myself. 8# jugs, even more cost-effective.

While all of that is true it does not justify price gouging, which is a big part of our problem.

When local guns shops charge anywhere from $45 to $60 for a pound of Varget (not to mention whatever gouging comes from Hodgdon), it’s up to us to police it.

The price of pickup trucks or horse hay or sailboats doesn’t really matter. If anything it proves this is narrowing down from a rich persons game to a very rich persons game.
