What is minimum amount of scope travel to reach 1000 yards ?

What is the minimum about of up and down scope travel do you need to reach 1000 yard target for a 6.5 Creedmoor and 308 cal rifles ? I know lots of variables but let's just say stand factory ammo 123 to 143 gr in the creedmoor and 175 to 185 with 308 cal. Do you think scopes with a min of 39 moa up And down plus adding a 20 moa scope mount would be the minimum ? Thanks. Martyd

The combination you stated should work just fine. I have 20 moa built in to all my rifles and add 20-25 moa to go from 100 yd. zero to 1K. I like to keep the scopes in the middle of their adjustment range so that they remain more consistent in their movement.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Easily. The 308 is the one that's gonna use some elevation. My 308 with 185 vlds @ 2700 needs 32+/- @ 1000yds( 1000' elevation). The creedmore will be around 26-28 maybe, guessing. You'll be fine.

39 MOA of adjustment range means that you will start with 20MOA of available up elevation at the muzzle IF and that needs to be verified on paper, IF everything is mounted and aligned perfectly. Adding the 20 MOA mount will mean you have a total of 40MOAs to play with. You will surrender a couple MOAs to get a 100 yard zero and you will need a minimum of 30MOAs (probably more) to get to 1000 yards. You should be able to get there, but the adjustments will be in the last few clicks and that my give you some issues if much windage is required. Also, that will compress the springs inside the scope, which may have some deleterious effect on them. 40 to 45 or more MOAs of total travel would be better, and more would be better still. It's difficult to find that in 30mm scopes with high magnification and virtually even more son in a 1 inch scope and still have quality optics.

Thanks for good info. Sounds like I really should go for scope with a little more moa. Maybe 45 or 50 and then ad a 20 moa rail. Thanks guys It sure is great that you guys are willing to share you knowledge. This is the best gun forum in the berm marty

DL iStrelok or another ballistic program and play with any reticle/scope you want. I use it all the time when shooting and if my desired scope/reticle combo isn't on there I consider other options

Remember too that some scopes get problematic with windage adjustments the closer the elevation setting is to the ends of travel.

Ideally, you need a scope with enough elevation adjustment so, with your 20 MOA rail, you're somewhat close to the centre of scope adjustment at the longest distance & a decent distance from end of travel at the shortest. Taking that need for 40 MOA travel for the .308, ideal would have your 1000 yard setting at no more than 15 MOA above centre, which would mean that you 100 yard zero would be around 25 below centre. Give 100 yards a good 10 MOA clearance from the stops & you come up with an ideal of needing 25+10=30 MOA below the adjustment centre, or a minimum scope adjustment of 60 MOA.

But remember what was said before. A 20 MOA rail doesn't necessarily translate to 20 MOA on paper. It depends on the flex in your barrel, the trueness of your action & other mechanical & vibration issues.

+1 on Burris Signature Rings with the plastic inserts. Use them and a 20 MOA rail. You should never run out of up. An added plus is you don't leave ring marks.

Went with the burris zee rings. Thanks. Martyd

Wise choice. That's what I do. Actually use 20s front and rear & zero at bottom of my scope vertical adj for max UP-ability. You can also move'em / rotate slightly to compensate if the base isn't dead nutz straight with the bore.

I had one rifle like that. Don't know if tube was slightly bent from shipping (fellow didn't remove it from bench gun for shipping !!!) or mis alignment but had to run'em 10:30 to 4:30 as well as comp for elevation.

Excellent choice. I have some of those and they are great. Please spend some time at the Burris site to understand the use of the inserts. The determining factor here is the distance between the rings. I used trigonometry to figure out the MOA offset for the various inserts at the distance between my rings; I used the arctangent of that distance for the angle.

However, you do not need to do that anymore since Burris includes a conversion table in the users manual for the rings. They provide for distances between 3.5 inch to 6 inch in quarter inch increments and then show the required offsets to attain from 5 to 45 MOA. Only at 4.75 inches between the rings do the value of the inserts actually translate to the equivalent MOA. If you can set the rings to be at that exact distance on the scope (center to center), you would be golden. Otherwise, you will have to approximate and go from there.

TAJ45...bayou shooter..... Thanks for info. I might pm you in future on how to install them. Great info that i did not know. Martyd
