What scope for F-class?

Hi guys,

I'm new to this board and long ranger shooting. I have a 308 win and would like to shoot long range and eventualy try F-class. My rifle is a CZ550 varmint and I need a good scope. I'm looking at Nightforce NXS but I'm not sure what magnification to get. I have a friend who tells me that 5.5x22 is all I would ever need but I thought that the higher 8x32 or even 12x42 would be better cause I can always dial down to 22. The problem is that you lose so much adjustability with the high mag scopes. My question is, will the 5.5x22 be enough to reach a 1000 yards or is it better to use a MOA rail and a higher mag scope?

Thanks for your thoughs!

The 5.5 is a perfect hunting scope, but I'd suggest the 12x42 for 1000 yard F-Class..You can always turn it down if you don't need it..

a 308 will eat up a lot of adjustment be sure to get a 20moa base from CZ. I would almost get the 8-32 to be on the safe side, don't forget Sightron's also...

Agree with falconpilot on the Nightforce 12x42 BR. I have one on my Savage 308 and after shooting in few 1000yd matches you can really see the target and I have an EGW 20 degree base on it. 308 has a fairly decent drop at a 1000yds.

I bet your friend does not win many F-Class matches.... For F, you need the highest magnification you can make work with your rifle (meaning how much elevation you need to get to 1k)..

Most of the folks I shoot F with, never turn their scopes down, no matter how high the mirage. Well, maybe Falconpilot as he is probably turning his down from 80 power now down to 40 where the rest of us shoot... ;) ;D

Mark and Ray are correct and the 12-42 BR is a good choice for fixed-distance shooting at a lower cost than the NXS. Of course, if you are a "high flier" and can afford a March... ;)

Mark,

If your nice, I'll let you look thur it ::)

All kidding aside, like Mark says, I do run my March on 50X most of the time..only in the worst conditions do I back it down...

March..Nightforce...they are both great scopes..
