What is currently a competitive 100 yrd benchrest group ?

Some of our local shooters are aware of a BR shooter friend of mine, Britt Robinson. Britt knows accuracy with a shotgun also.

Britt Robinson
Inducted in 1984 ATA Hall of Fame
Born: 1-May-1905
State: TX
Britt Robinson of Tahoka, Tex. began shooting at age 10. Twenty-six years later, he became the youngest to be inducted into the Trapshooting Hall of Fame. By then he had captured three Doubles, one All-Around and three High-Over-All championships at the Grand American and placed on eight All-America open first teams, earning captain’s or co-captain’s honors five times.

He set two records while earning 10 Trap and Field All-Around Average Awards, and when he led handicap and doubles averages in 1970, he was the first to top both those lists since 1933. He was the initial person to win the Doubles Championship at the Grand twice with 100 straight and the first to break two, three, four, five and six perfect scores in Grand twin competition. He set a long-run handicap record from the 27, tied the high mark for doubles marathons twice, and shot on two record-setting singles squads. He captured 12 Texas ATA titles in 25 years, including seven after leaving junior ranks.

In 1959, his first year of ATA competition, Britt was Sub-Junior Clay Target Champion at the Grand American, and he repeated for the crown the next two years, setting a consecutive record. In 1961 he was also high Class A junior in the Class Championships plus junior runnerup in the Champion of Champions. The next year he earned the 26-yard trophy for life members in the Grand American Handicap. Robinson was Tuesday’s Special Doubles winner at the 1967 Grand after a 99 and prelim Saturday’s doubles leader in 1968 with 100. In 1969 he won Class AA H-O-A honors, the high-gun award in prelim Sunday’s handicap, and the prelim International title with 100 plus overtime. He was AA champion in the 1970 Class Doubles.

In 1971 Britt was High-Over-All Champion, All-Around runnerup, and AA runnerup in the Doubles Championship. He repeated as H-O-A Champion the following year, after annexing the All-Around and the Doubles championships. His was the third 100 to win the Doubles crown and marked the initial time for any shooter to have two 100s in Grand twin competition. That year he was also AA runnerup in the Class twins and prelim Friday’s handicap leader. In 1973 Robinson became the first to have three 100s in doubles at the Grand, winning on prelim Saturday. He was also Friday’s singles leader and Class AA 16-yard high on Saturday.

Britt won his third High-Over-All crown in 1974, when he was also AA runnerup in the Clay Target after 200 straight as well as Trap and Field Handicap Champion and winner of the prelim International race.

The 1974 Doubles Championship was his for 100 straight, the first time in history anyone had won twice with a perfect score. He regained the crown in 1980 with 99. In 1983 he ended third in AA of the Class Doubles following a perfect century, and that set a record for six 100s in Grand competition. His fifth had come in 1980’s preliminary Saturday race.

At age 11 years and two months, Robinson was the youngest on record to break 100 straight singles (to win a Class B award at the 1959 Southwestern Zone Shoot). The record stood for 22 years. He set a handicap long-run mark of 244 in 1973, and he matched record scores of 971x1,000 in doubles marathons twice, in 1969 and 1970.

Robinson broke 200 on a record-setting singles squad of 997x 1,000 in 1971, at the Phoenix Chain, and two years later he broke 200 in the Dayton Homecoming as his squad tied the Grand American record of 996. Britt earned a berth on first-string All-America teams from 1969 through 1976, being captain alone in 1973 and 1974 and sharing the top spot in 1971, 1972 and 1975. He was captain of the sub-junior team in 1960, 1962 and 1963, and he also placed on the team in 1961. He was on the 1966 junior team and the 1968 men’s second team.

He led yearly handicap averages in 1970 and 1971 plus headed doubles standings the former year, becoming the second in history to head handicap and doubles in the same year. Ten Trap and Field All-Around Average Awards include junior high in 1961 and 1962 and open leader in 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1973. He set a record with his 1972 average of .9641 and surpassed it with .9645 the following year. He also earned awards in 1971, 1974, 1975 and 1983.

Except in 1963, Britt earned every Texas ATA junior singles crown from 1961 through 1966. In 1970 he was doubles champion with a state record 99, and he successfully defended that title the next two years. He also won all-around championships in 1970, 1972 and 1975 — that last year with a record 394 — plus the singles in 1974 with 200 straight. In 1975 he was one championship short of a title sweep at Southwestern Zone, winning all but the singles.

Robinson won awards in every championship contest at the 1982 Midwestern Grand, tieing for the All-Around title with a record 395x400, and he also snared a prize in 1984’s Southern Grand Doubles Championship.

Britt had a total of three 100s from the 27-yard line and 18 100s in doubles at the end of the 1983 target year.

Britt is still a cotton farmer in Tahoka, just east of Lubbock, Texas. Britt mostly club shoots BR and long range. We visit by phone about 2 times per month. He is just one 'ell of a competitor. All disciplines are difficult in its own way, but a real competitor can master more than one.

Gun handling. I can slap the trigger on my 125# rail gun and you can see the result on the target.

Tuners. Nothing against them, but I would wager 7 of the top 10 at Holton we're not using them.

I don't know those numbers yet but it's clear that more and more shooters are seeing the benefits of a tuner. I very firmly believe that they will be as much a part of a new build as a trigger or a barrel, within a short while. The old way of tuning still works, so you'll have some that are set in their ways for some time to come, while others learn to keep up with tune in a better way that is much easier to learn and just as effective and more precise. Not to mention, can be done at the bench. They're all up side. I don't see any down side except weight, which is why several LV guns still don't use them. That's a whole 'nuther subject but I wish there were no 10.5lb class. Just make em all HV's. It could be done like IBS VFS, where records are still maintained separately for anyone, that for some reason, prefers to shoot a 10.5lb rifle. It seems like a rule that inhibits experimentation rather than encouraging it. Most just shoot their LV rifle in HV, so why not?

Peace,
Mike

Try it,then you have the right to voice your opinion . That part about not learning "gun handling"...now that just shows you are uneducated in this field, only one way to learn.
Name the time and place. I am 100% for trying any new shooting sport offered. I can accept your push easily, as I have never, ever backed down from a challenge to try a new way to shoot. Not once.

If you are willing to donate the time, barrel life, and brass life, I'll pay for the bullets, powder, and primers.

lol Kind of like I will accept your challenge to a stockcar race. Just provide everything and I will pay for gas and oil.

People, your reply is along the lines of the one by dale before.

Where I come from, yes, we DO lend an afternoon and a rig to a new shooter. Many of the precision and precision-ish shooting sports are losing attendance under the onslaught of run/gun Redbull race shooting. WE try to to what we can to be ambassadors of our sports, and make them easy enough to try out that maybe we hook somebody every now and then.

I currently shoot Across the Course, Long Range, Rimfire Silhouette, 10 meter Air Rifle, and 10 meter Air Pistol. And hunt and shoot defensive practice with a couple pistols and a rifle.

When I said I won't be trying Benchrest, it's because I have enough other things in the air and the wallet that that is just not a fiscal option at the moment unless I reappropriated all my other gear...

...so short of getting HOOKED by some ambassador of YOUR sport, it probably won't ever happen. That's the story.

Dale gave me a push here on this internet, and that's totally fine, but I will push back nearly always. Personality flaw, sure, but those who shoot with me know I'd do ANYthing for them if I respect them and vice versa. Some of the best people on the planet don't live on the internet.

Dusty and I had a cordial academic conversation here, with almost ZERO disrespect between us, or where we came from, so I don't understand where the goddamn hostility is coming from a day later from random people with no apparent data to add.

any match you can attend there will be somebody there to let you try a rifle. if you go to a match I'm at ill provide everything down to the primers but you have to shoot the match not just hanging around watching. we don't let folks spectate. where are you located?

Where can I find info regarding air rifle and pistol comps? I'm embarrassed to say but I have a relatively cheap springer underlever that I recently got my hands on that can shoot really tight groups but I'm guessing no one competes with springers nowadays. Maybe just FT? Used to post on "the yellow" back in the day, maybe 15+ years ago or so.

I totally under stand what you are saying. Your post that I quoted sounded more like a demand than thanking a person for the use of their fire arm and offering to pay for ammo.

There is no hostilely or even "goddamn hostility" in my post like I said your post read like a demand and not what you are saying it actually was intended to.

Just so everyone is on the same page.

I have let many new shooters use my stuff to shoot matches. I will let seasoned shooters use my stuff also. You know how it goes your stuff breaks or is left at home. I will lend out my extra. I always travel "heavy" when I go to matches so there is always extra gear I have.

Pro tip: Make a list and use said list.

With that being said I will only lend out the better stuff to new shooters. What is very surprising is how many shooters I have offered everything they need and ammo to shoot a match, to only get turned down. Very few will try something new. I know shooting groups sucks at all levels but to turn down free ammo. Something has to be wrong with them. :)

The only time I do not have extra gear is when we fly in. Then it is just me and my AW.

Nasty Nat
Harrison, Michigan Saturday September 22 10:00am eye and ear protection must be worn.

Thanks! That's a little far, but either way, I have a State Championship to shoot that day.

Why the "nasty nat" comment? (maybe in jest? hard to read tone on the internet)

Probably your State Association is the best option for local info.

The CMP shoots some of it at a National level up at Perry, but I've never taken it that far. I wish I had known earlier, as I might have tried for an NCAA team, but that's long gone.

You are correct that nobody really shoots with spring air rifles now, not that that means you can't. At this point, even the single-stroke pneumatics (SSP) are just about null. Everybody is on pre-charged pneumatics (PCP) so that they can take 300 full power shots from their tank, and never do anything except open the loading port, insert a pellet, and close it.

If you think about it, for 3P or 4P, the PCP rifle is worlds ahead of either of the other two, not necessarily due to inherent accuracy, but due to the effects on the shooter and the shooter's position by having to charge the other rifles each shot.

On the interweb, pilkguns.com, targettalk.org both have more info on Olympic sports than most other places, and the forum would be a good place to re-ask your question.

Champion's Choice,
10pt9.com,
nordicmarksman.com
Champion Shooter's Supply

...are all wondeful places to absorb your money. :D

I actually have done all you listed and currently do even more. In br we get competitors that used to do every sport from high power, bullseye, palma, archery even shotguns at the highest level of those games. Thats how i know how hard it is to do the other games and how much its amplified competing in br compared to the other sports. Silhouette is the hardest of all the shooting sports, besides maybe biathlon, but you can shoot silhouette and win with a factory rifle that shoots 1/2moa. Im still chasing a 36 but i do have all 4 ten pins (just if i can get them all at once)

Silhouette looks like a fun competition, but I don't know how anyone does it. Even with my superlight, I can't hold the unsupported barrel steady enough to take an ethical shot at whitetail at 100 yds.. Of course, I haven't learned to use a sling yet. By comparison, BR shooting off front and rear bags almost seems like cheating.

Heavier barrel doesn't stir the air as much. Light ain't good.

Well, if you want to learn how to stand in street clothes and hold 3-4" at 100, training for Silhouette will get that done in the most direct and painful fashion possible. :)

My Offhand hold on the best days in my coat is 2-2.25 MOA, kinda regardless of rifle, as long as it sorta fits. My hold without the coat, i.e. in Silhouette, is more like 3-4 MOA....and I'm guessing there.

Now about BR. It does look like cheating, same as F-class. Their rests and teflon and polished aluminum and paint jobs look more like a car show than a rifle sometimes. But if you sit down and watch them for a bit, and observe their target sizes (or the group needed to be competitive), you'll find it ain't even the same ballgame as what I try to shoot.

I'm pretty darn happy with a rifle doin 1/4 minute. They are finding a new barrel.

I'm very very happy when I can keep 20 rounds in 1 MOA at 300 yards. They are pulling hair out at the loading bench.

My rounds will usually hold 1/2 Minute vertical or better.

Their TARGET isn't 1/2 Minute...

Make sense? Different stroke, sure, but not easier.

Seriously? I pole-vaulted 14'6" and ran 100 meters in 11 seconds in high school. I could bench press my own weight several times in my day, but there is no way I could hold a barrel stable enough. I never claimed to have a surgeon's hands. What kind athleticism is required to pull that off?

None at all. You cant stop the rifle from moving you just have to minimize it and pull the trigger at the right time
