What has happened to the rifle ranges? All ARs now, no chronographs.

I'm getting ready to go to my 'Public' range tomorrow. Practice for my next 600 F-Open at the end of the month.
For many at the local 100 yd range my cheap No-Gas AR is weird.

I like Cheap, I like Attention, I like small groups.
I am not a great shooter but usually have a few AR shooters stop and watch.

I do get a few suggestions on how to fix my cycling issues :)
Yup, my name is Rocket, and I'm a wannabe Seal :)

My local range had over 70 shooters today. I did a head count. Probably at least 30 were female. A lot of handgun shooting and plenty of gas guns. I was shooting my .308 bolt gun. I do own 2 AR's going to buy a 3rd.

Man the snobbiness and derp is deep in this one....

If turnabout is fair play then I have to say I have never seen the allure of F class or bench rest and equating it to marksmanship. Spending a metric load of cash to build a rifle and the same developing a load to shoot tiny groups is lost on me. The gun is doing most of the work and winning by and large comes down to who has spent the most $$$ and tuned stuff the best. Sure it takes some level of proficiency on the booger hook to get the most out of the platform and sometimes physical conditions are a factor but seriously. Yawn.

As a HP competitor I find it much more gratifying to develop, build and tune MYSELF To the point of utilizing my equipment to its fullest potential. I am “fairly” proficient with the AR platform. It is my main competition platform and to say I am not a real “marksman” is downright insulting. It is gratifying when you are winning in a game where most of the equipment is equally capable.

I take every opportunity to try and suck all of the “blasters” i run across into slinging up and realizing just how precise they can be.
It's the equipment, huh? Let's shoot an FTR match side by side. You can use my rifle. Then lets compare scores.

Wow m14,amu! You just keep getting funnier and funnier every time you bash AR owners. You know funny like a dead child.o_O

I guess you are just mad that almost no one uses the lack luster M14 any more.

AR-15s are the canary in the coal mine, so to speak. Any harmful legislation is going to go after them first. With that in mind, I think it’s a wonderful thing that there’s so many people out shooting them. The more people who aren’t scared of them, the better off we all are.

I say, blast away, young-uns!

I agree. Hope they are all 2A supporters and vote regularly, and if they live in Chicagoland, vote multiple times

Indeed, blast away

I would challenge the conception that all AR folks are merely a bunch of "dirt clod rapid fire blasters." I basically only shoot AR's... But especially at long range.

Given I live in central OH, I shoot primarily at places like Rayner's and Thunder Valley, and I am frequently one of the only people on the firing line with an AR shooting at the 600-1000 yard ranges. That being said, I have found my AR's to be remarkably capable and have embarrassed many less experienced bolt shooters/reloaders. Don't worry - mine have suppressors and a brass catcher so I won't be bothering any of you bolt gun guys.

While I also find the dirt clod shooters obnoxious, but we all need to embrace every aspect of the shooting community as long as it is SAFE. The preservation of my right to own and shoot my weapons is a direct result of these masses participating and representing this sport.

Give the new and obnoxious an example to follow.
Help them when indicated, like when they can't lock back the bolt, or get a case stuck.
Hot brass, oh well, that's life :)

Years back I was shooting my M1 Garand off hand at a 100 yard SR1 target. Had my scope, jacket, etc. Shooting 9s and 10s I was happy.

Then he showed up. SKS rifle with 50mm scope on top, shooting off sandbags, at 25 yards on a reduced B34 target. Looked like he shot 00 buck at it and he seemed happy! Looked down at my target and shot me a dirty look. Just one of many I see from time to time.

Well,
Unfortunately, some of these folks are undesireables. I once went to a public range and a group of young guys showed up in brand new trucks, looking like they were fresh out of the University with their first well paying job. I saw them as I left the rifle range, as they entered the pistol range. I remember that it sounded like a war was going on. The range had a policy of "no mag dumping". It didn't matter to them. They were going to do what they wanted anyway. I remember seeing a bunch of them get on the benches, standing on them, and letting loose with all they had at some kind of target, probably a sillouhette, as they yelled "get the Bitch". I immediately drove off and reported my findings to the managrment.

Fools will be fools. Not necessarily related to the type of gun. If it appears someone is having trouble I'll offer to help.
Doesn't work all the time though. The ranges I go to are pretty well 'policed'.
If someone doesn't heed the RO, he'll pull out his badge and become the SO.
I go to this group event twice a year. Just a fun little group of old guys, women and children :)
Getting involved with like minded friends in an organized shoot is a great way to further shooting sports.
Here's me at a Mardi Gras themed event in South Florida. Drove all the way from the New Orleans area, camped for 5 days, shot and ate, and had fun. The hat had flashing LEDs to distract the other shooters :)

The winning target, then a sudden death, top two on 100yd Tannerite pumpkins.
Notice that the wife is NOT in the top two this time. :)
( I so want to photoshop out that flier )

We had some pew, pew,pew guys there, but it was civilized.

And are we sure they weren’t talking about you? :p
Or practicing for Prom night.
Some you won't reach. (at less than 600 yards).

But, unless you is a Natural Born Killer, you probably had a mentor. Your dad, your Gunny, an internet guy named Rocketvapor, probably helped you along the way to being a fine shootin rifle snob. Being recognized as a sensible shooter when around others will have some impact.
Maybe just a little.
Shoot little dots on the rifle range and holler Damn when you get a 8, I use the 3 inch bull because it's a scaled down 600 F-Class target and that 8 crossed the line so it's a 9 :)

or on the pistol range do the Mel Gibson face thing.

The eyes probably should have been a little closer together :)
Not trying to make this a Brag thread but when Rambo is out there trying to impress his date with his Skills, educate him.

I am seeing more precision shooters. chassis rifles. as well as the ar's. 80/20 precision/hunters

I recently joined a very safe range just south of Albany, Oregon. Very safe with rigid range rules. The rifle range only goes out to 200 yards which is a downer. I'm the only one there with a chronograph in my 10 range travels. I'm the only guy trying to develop loads for my bolt action that I can see. 90% of the shooters are firing off .223 and .308 ARs. Is this a good thing? I suppose anything and anyone to keep the range going and in action is good but I sure wish there were some bench rest shooters around. I'm a beginner and would be fun to watch the pros.

With all the Democrat/Progressive/Leftist attempts to ban or restrict 'Assault Rifles' people are rushing to the get these 'evil weapons of mass destruction' before any of this attempts become laws. And I think that is a good thing (buying AR15/AR10) :)

5 hours at the range yesterday. I was the only bolt action rifle on the line during the 5 hours. I also had a 10/22 that I shot 20 rounds thru. 10 positions in all multiple people per position. The guy to the left of me had 3 gas guns with a 4th upper. They all shot good, he could shoot them well. He was a very nice young man. He pieced those rifles together.

At the 100 yd range I frequent (Honey Island Shooting Range) today and man it was miserable.
A few shooters, including a 3 generation family group, some their first time shooting.

Fell below 50F as a front came through, started raining, windy, thought it might snow (?)
I took a few rounds of a few loads to test and some targets for a 1 MOA Challenge I started on another little forum.
Figured I might as well be the guinea pig.
So wet and windy that some of the holes slid out of the target dots, messing up my groups.
Requirement? 5 shots inside a 1 MOA circle at least 3 times out of 5
Easy Peasy? Challenge-Set-Up.jpg Cold-bore-on-steel.jpg 3-out-of-five-1-MOA.jpg Just barely made it.
Once the paper dries I'm supposed to show a quarter in the pic.

The moral of this story? The pew, pew, pew guys don't like bad weather.

Far too many wannabe's on the range I go to (it's public and not monitored). Haven't been able to shoot my handguns at the 25 in over a year. Guys blasting away while another video tapes him....suppose they post that on U-tube to impress their GF
I've learned to do load development at the 350...AR boys won't go there.
There are some that do try though. Saw several at the 100 that had their rig re-barreled and scoped trying to get accuracy out of their rig. Those I don't mind....I suppose the pew-pew wore off by then by $$$ spent on ammo and little to show for it other than the rush.
