What has happened to the rifle ranges? All ARs now, no chronographs.

Going back to the title of this thread, - - - No Chronographs,
I usually have a couple shooters come up and ask me (or I hear them ask someone else) what is that ?
I explain. Now they know :)
The range I go to is well monitored. Stupid people are escorted off.
I've been to a few that were 'self monitored'. If the stupid people out number the sane ones, I leave.
Getting shot, by accident or on purpose is just not worth it.
The range I go to for my 600 matches is open during the week, key holding members and guests.
The local sheriff's office will enforce 'complaints' for rule breakers, trespassing and hold 'weapons' until it is resolved.
Or so I've heard.

If you have problems at your unmonitored range I suggest getting a LEO (Game Warden if on state managed land) to go shooting with you.
Sunday after a local gun show would be a great time :)
bring Donuts :)
Once word got out that guns were being taken (drop on down to the station to pick them up Monday dude) maybe things would improve.
Maybe not.

You folks that think these idiots vote and that every vote is good might want to rethink what 'a bad guy with a gun' does for us.

I recently joined a very safe range just south of Albany, Oregon. Very safe with rigid range rules. The rifle range only goes out to 200 yards which is a downer. I'm the only one there with a chronograph in my 10 range travels. I'm the only guy trying to develop loads for my bolt action that I can see. 90% of the shooters are firing off .223 and .308 ARs. Is this a good thing? I suppose anything and anyone to keep the range going and in action is good but I sure wish there were some bench rest shooters around. I'm a beginner and would be fun to watch the pros.
Tesla, I'm based in Portland north of you and there are a couple of very good ranges that can provide you the ability to watch shooting competitions. www.douglasridge.org and www.tcgc.org are the two ranges that I know of with shooting calendars posted on their websites. Whether amateur or pro, these people "practice, practice, practice".

Regarding chronographs, I empathize. I feel funny putting out my chronograph when there are more magnetos and radar units these days. However you measure velocity, knowing is vital to accurate load development.

Regarding the AR popularity, the availability of components and vendors offering them not to mention the recent ATF rule changes allowing sub 16" barrels with "arm braces" instead of shoulder stocks has brought the ratio of gas gun to bolt gun to a much higher multiple. I'm for it because it is expanding our sport. The ability to develop, tune, shoot, adjust these shooting platforms is similar to what reloaders are doing but with much cheaper ammo in some cases. As long as someone isn't spraying hot steel cases all over my bench from their ejection port because they are too lazy to setup the available screens, I'm happy! Should you ever want to visit Tricounty gun club in Sherwood, OR, send me a PM and I'll happily host you for a day. I usually have some loads that need testing and always love a reason for a range day.
