What happenned to Optics Planet?

I’ve purchased from them numerous times. Everything arrived just fine. If an item is backordered, they give an estimated in stock date. Every item that showed as in stock was here within a week. A backordered item took longer than expected but remember, that was an estimated in stock date.

At one time their pricing was excellent, not necessarily the case anymore.

Dave.

When you order something from ANYWHERE, and you're in a big-azzed hurry to receive it, the odds of becoming unhappy are much greater.

I'd say that if you're getting something from Optics Planet, you've already put low price ahead of almost everything else.

We live in a world where with one key-stroke, we can have almost anything show up a day or two from now. Yet we still get miffed when it doesn't happen that way. I'm thinking we may be getting spoiled. jd

Its like throwing a steak in your dogs dish, then telling him not to eat it. The dog wants it right now!

All this technology today, there shouldn`t be any excuses for companies failure rates being what they are.

Because they will sell an item not in stock, but not inform you until later…sometimes only after you inquire. Burned a couple of times….never again!

But I don’t really have an op about their business model. ;)
Same here for a long time there are many others to buy from

I’ll put in a plug for SportOptics. A ‘local to me’ company with excellent customer service and fair prices. I just wish they were a March dealer.

About 5 years ago, I ordered some Leupold bases and rings only from OP. Supposedly in stock for immediate shipment. 2 weeks later in answer to my email, they said they were still trying to get clearance from the government because of the Munitions Act. I cancelled and never considered ordering from them again. From the comments here, it looks like they use any excuse to get and hang onto your order when its not in stock.

I think all companies do it to some extent. I ordered a scope from Creedmoor, a company that I consider reliable and respectable, back during the heart of the panic. It show in stock so I figured they were just swamped. After a few months I checked with them and found out that they had never had it in stock and didn't know when they would get them. I went on a search for a replacement and found a place that actually had them so, I ordered one.

About 18 months after the initial order, I received the scope from Creedmoor...now I had 2 and only wanted one. They never contacted me to see if I still wanted it, they never called, they never emailed...nothing.

I contacted Creedmoor and explained the situation. They were friendly about about it and sent me a mailing tag to return it.

I packed it up slapped the return tag on it and off it went.

A couple weeks later, I saw my credit and I was beside myself.

They had charged me a 20% restocking fee, postage to send it back and, since it was a free shipping purchase, the charged me for that shipping as well.

They may think that they won but, in reality, they lost a lot. That was the first year I had my FFL and I bought a ton of stuff that year...somewhere in the 50-60k range. most of it was bought from manufacturers and distributors but, about 20% was spent buying from small retailers. In the 20 years or so since that happened, they might have gotten $1k in sales from me. Those purchases all happened in the last year or two...it takes me a long time to forget a company that screwed me.

Lastly, I contacted my credit card company and they told me that Creedmoor had violated the TOSs and, if I remember correctly, federal fair business practices laws. If a package is delayed more than a certain amount of time, the seller is required by law to contact the buyer before shipping to ensure they still wanted it. They never did that.

The CC company said it wouldn't be worth it to go after them for a few hundred dollars but, since I spent so much on my card, they refunded the lost amount as a good faith, customer service effort.

I still use the credit card as my primary method of payment but, I do minimal business with Creedmoor....who won again?
