What goes BUMP in the night? (unfortunatly not the shoulders on my 22-250 brass)

Howdy All,
I am new to this forum and I found this link below while searching Google for answers to bumping the shoulders back on my 22-250 brass. I decided to join this forum too.
http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/die-issues-when-bumping-shoulders/
I read the article several times and I am really not sure how to solve my problem. I have a Redding FL sizing die that does not size the neck.. (#75106 Body Die Category I) I really have no need to resize FL since I shoot a bolt action, one at a time from the bench only.
First Quesion Where can I get Harrell's collar? I have never seen one for sale. Is it available for sale somewhere?

Second Question.... after I explain some info.
In the very last paragraph at the above link, I tried backing my die out 1/2 turn from shell holder, (ram UP). The case sized down only .001 about 1/2" up from the base but no push-back of the shoulder occurred. So ... remembering I only want to bump back the shoulder on my several times fired cases, and not really want the case FL re-sizeed, what can I do to achieve this result?
PS. I also tried the cam-over thing. It only bumped shoulder back a "shaky" .001 at the most ......... and it of course FL sized the whole case which I do not want to do.

Thanks in advance , Indy Bob

First let me say that you may want to search full length sizing here. That said and if you still want to do what you said send in fired cases to a Die Manufacturer, or have a reamer made, for a custom die.

Good morning.

Your problem is that you have a FL die (less neck section), and you cannot "bump" a shoulder with a FL die, without first sizing the whole body. A FL die sizes the body FIRST, and touches the shoulder last - so backing off the die does not help.

The ONLY die that will do what you want is a Forster Bump die - it will only size (bump) the shoulder, without ever touching the body. Think of it as a neck size / shoulder bump die, or... without the bushing, a shoulder bump die. IT is a great die and does exactly what you want.

There are those that will tell you that cases must be FL sized every time... that is fine if you have a $150 custom die (available in few calibres)...

... but with non-custom "Over The Counter" FL dies, and standard body dies... you get no benifit other than beating the crap out of your cases.

Hey CatShooter,
I don't believe the dates. I must not have replied to your posting above about the Forster Bump die. Sorry.
Bottom Line: I took your advice and bought that Forster Bump die. I don't use the bushings for neck sizing. (I still have GREAT luck with the inexpensive Lee Collet die neck resizing die). It is WAaayyyy late, but thanks. It works AWESOME.

Oh gosh...Indy, no matter what, don't follow the Guff into that dark hole of doublespeak.

Glad to see you are back. If you find that you want more info on this topic, feel free to PM me and maybe I can help you a bit

I guess I don't understand your problem because all you have to do is set your full sizing die to size the entire case so it will chamber with a slight resistance. Bumping .001 to .002" is ideal. You don't want to over size because the 22 250 case will stretch a lot.

I like to measure bump with a gage but you can do it with the chamber of your rifle using a trail and error method starting with zero cam then turning the die down a little at a time until you can chamber with slight resistance.

If you only bump the shoulder back for this caliber I believe you will have problems chambering eventually because the case will also expand circumferentially also and eventually it won't chamber.

I loaded my 22 250 for years full sizing with a slight bump and never had a problems with chambering or head separation using the above procedure.

never, never joke about F.Guffy,,he will show up,,his computer searches for the word shoulder 24&7,
