I shot this bull last night. It was about 200yds shot with my 300wsm using 215 Bergers. As typically with Bergers I had to shoot it 3 times because it didn't react to the shot or drop. I need to find the time to work up a load with ELD-M's. It was a terrible pack out. I shot it at 5:30pm and got back to camp at 10:30pm.

I went back up to "guide" for my buddy from WA and to help out my hunting partner. Monday my buddy from WA shot this small 5 point in the first hour of hunting. We didn't get into anymore elk, we did jump a nice whitetail buck yesterday but nobody had a tag, until the drive back to the trailer. A couple miles from camp at about 2pm a bull decided to stand in the road as we were doing about 40mph. He jumped above the road with his buddy and my hunting partner did him in on what was to be the lest few minutes of his hunting trip. We even loaded him whole in the UTV.

Well we end our elk season(s) with a couple more bulls. We didn't see any really big bulls this year like we did 2 years ago when we had this same tag so we got what we got and yesterday was the end of the season. We spotted my bull the day before and I couldn't see the goofy horn on the one side. So we snuck in close, around 40yds, on part of the group and all we saw were cows. They got up and started to take off when this 1x6 bull with a bunch more cows got up out of a cut we couldn't see. My buddy was taking pictures of the cows and was slow to react so I let him have it. Yesterday we got in on 2 6x6 bulls and my buddy got this bull. We packed both bulls out in one trip, half of a elk each. Mine was mostly down hill, his not so much. To be honest his was level or steep up hill for 2 miles and I'm feeling some pain today. 
Not a bad year, 5 bulls in 8 days of hunting between myself and 2 buddies and we passed on some smaller bulls on Sunday or it would of only been 6 days of hunting. Not to mention my buddy from WA got his first elk ever.

I took this antelope on opening day in Wyoming, area 18, north of Gillette, WY. The rifle is a custom build on a Defiance, Deviant Hunter action that I won at the 600 yd. Nationals (2015) at Vapor Trail Valley. It is chambered in 6mm Creedmoor, has a Bartlein 5-R barrel, 24" long, Jewell trigger and McMillan stock. The scope is a Vortex Viper-PST 6x-24x FFP.
I used Hornady factory ammo, Precision Hunter 103 gr. ELDX bullets. I practiced with this ammo on targets out to 400 yards from field positions with the Harris bi-pod that's in the photo. On opening morning, a shot presented itself at less than 200 yards! Go figure...

the receiver and barrel to match the stock..!

I shot a young whitetail buck yesterday afternoon. My neighbor's freezer was getting low and his work load was making it difficult for him to get out in the field, so I happily volunteered to help him put some venison in the freezer.
The deer was nothing special - a young buck that had managed to break off both of his antlers - but the experience was remarkable. My neighbor lent me his custom Sako in .257 Roberts AI, built by Parker Ackley himself. It's a beautiful hunting rifle that handles like lightning and it shoots like a champ. I've fired this rifle at the range several times, but taking it into the woods was a special treat. After all, I'm a big fan of Parker Ackley's work.
I was standing at the edge of a clearing surrounded by high grass, maples and a few apple trees and I had the rifle propped up against a fence post. I heard something moving to my right and the buck popped into view a few seconds later. I reached down with my left hand to grab the rifle and someone picked that precise moment to call my mobile phone! I had it in an internal chest pocket and it was set on vibrate, but the buzzing certainly got the deer's attention. Full alert, looking right at me, about 80 yards away. I froze, waiting for the phone to stop buzzing and it seemed to go on forever. It finally stopped and I still hadn't moved a muscle. After a minute or so, the deer decided to go about his business and started moving into the clearing. I got a hold of the rifle and started to bring it up when the phone buzzed again for a voicemail notification. Full alert again, looking right at me and now I'm doing my best not to move while holding the rifle in my left hand. He stared me for a minute or two and started moving across the clearing again. I quickly shouldered the rifle when he walked behind a stand of tall grass and, when he came back into view, I put a 100 gr. Speer into the lungs right behind the near shoulder. He ran for twenty yards or so and piled up. That 100 gr. Speer is one of my favorite .25 caliber game bullets, having used it for years in my .25-'06, and it made a mess of the vitals before exiting just behind the far shoulder.
I apologize for the lousy phone pictures. Needless to say, I was at odds with the darned thing when I got around to taking the pictures.

All three taken in 2 hours on public land, Same ridge. Used a 338 win mag with 225 sierra pro hunters at 2920 fps on the mule deer at 497 yards. Whitetail was 200 yards taken with 260 rem 143 eldx at 2820 fps. And the elk was 280 yards taken with a 270 wsm with 130 grain barnes at 3150 fps.

I hiked 8 miles back into the Bob Marshall Wilderness on foot and shot a 4X6 bull elk at 715 yards launching the 285gr ELD-M at 2970fps. The elk was 1000ft elevation above me and the wind was significant. I only took the shot because conditions were ideal for me to take a spotter shot in front of him and adjust accordingly. The shot intended for him hit the mark and he went straight down, then slid 200 yards down the steep snow covered slope.
The pack out was pure hell. I've done a lot of hard things but a 90-100lb pack in that terrain for that distance was something else.

Got to the deer stand 1 hour before sunrise. Had 3 hunters around me all within 300 yds. Two shots were fired from two different hunters within 30 minutes of each other.. It was about 9:30 am and I was just about to leave my stand I see a huge feral cat on the two track. I put on ear protection shouldered my 223 ( I grabbed the wrong case, I had the 223 and the 243 next to each other) anyway, I shouldered the 223. I get the 1/8" dot on the cat and it starts walking up the two track. I yell and it doesn't stop. Ended up wing shooting it..DRT... Rem 700 / 40 gr Vmax..~150 yds.

Oldest son, USMC veteran of Afghanistan, Helmand Province Sangin Valley took this whitetail this morning after I herded it to him. Check out his dog tag in his boot laces under the bucks chin.
I passed this buck Wednesday because of the broken tine and short tine on the left beam but knew he'd be happy with him.
Shot with a remington 700 SPS in .308 shooting Hornady black 155 AMAX's, very effective!
