What causes split groups

I've done that shooting a heavy gun. I shot too fast. After pushing the rifle back to battery against a stop the barrel was still vibrating from the impact. Cost me the Nationals once. I knew it when I finished my group. Lesson learned.
@DaveTo - how long do you like to wait after sliding the rifle forward?

This sort of thing could be one of my problems. I like to slide the rifle back and forth after loading and adjusting the joy stick. I have a piece of velcro loop on the forward stop bumper.

What kind of priming tool do you use to control seating?
Guys swear by the excellent K&M, I have the non gauge version however I use a 21st century uniformer and micro adjust seater that I picked up from a prize table.
Following a tip from @dmoran I found I wasn’t setting mine quite right to get what I was looking for on paper and when I got closer the groups cleaned up a bit.
Since this thread started ive been humbled by the generosity and contributions from the top shooters in the country, the best way to thank y’all is to put to practice the great advice. I’ve gone back through about every aspect of my routine or lack there of and made some adjustments and hopefully I can get better at reading the range next time.

After cleaning and scoping the last barrel ( finding chipping near the throat) I decided to pull it in favor of a fresh one and break out a new box of Vapor trails.

Thanks again fellas
Jim

The first thing I did was change my routine. I push the rifle back to battery before operating the bolt. I used O-rings on the stop to help cushion the contact. that is on my Hvy 1K rifle. I don't use a stop on my SR BR rifle.

Dave, what method do you use on your SR rifle? In other words, how do you know you have returned it to battery without a positive stop?
Thanks

Without reading all the above wisdom. The bedding or front receiver recoil lug might bottom out on the receiver socket with barrel heating.
That’s a good thought and in this case I did review the action bedding finding nothing unusual, this rifle has previously shot 2.3 LG at 1000 yards so I know the equipment is capable.

Personally, when firing at 100/200/300 yards, I have often solved double grouping by increasing powder charge by .1-.2 grains.
Dave
We normally shoot the stable overlap but in this case I was afraid of breaking out during later relays so I loaded low side but still in the node.
Shown in post #4.
