What causes a "Flyer" to go to the left???

Guys I am fighting a 284 that likes to throw a round out to the left about every other group. I was testing at 600yds and was shooting .5 moa groups on average. (This is my tactical rifle and I am not shooting off a bench.) About half of my groups will have a flyer off to the left. It will keep 4 around 2.5"s or so. This is driving me crazy!! I did get some brass from my old rifle mixed in with the brass for this one but its all FL sized so I can't see where it would be a problem. Now if I try to shoot the brass from this rifle in my old one I know it right away because I have some heavy drag on the bolt but not with the new one. The flyer can be anywhere from a couple of inches to 4 or 5"s It has on occasion thrown one low about the same distance. I shoot 162 AMAXs but have tried 175s in it and get the same results. Its a Bartlen barrel in light varmint contour, bedded into a fiberglass stock, with a MK 4 4.5x14 for optics. Any ideas you have would be appreciated.

It could be the brass. If they are fired different number of firings they get harder or softer from one another. That could make it shoot to a different place. My guess is wind could also be a factor.. Matt

Thanks for the reply Matt. It was pretty calm and the wind was head on and only a couple of miles an hour. Not enough to pull it that far off. I annealed the brass two firings ago so I am pretty sure its not that....

Maybe movement in your rear bag set up. Look closely at your natural point of aim and
gun handling. I was getting shots to the left when shooting prone with my rear bag on top of
my shooting mat. Put the bag directly on the ground using an Edgewood dead bottom and fixed it.
The padded mat was creating horizontial movement in my point of impact.

Good luck

Could be your hold on the rifle, I lost my first shot low a lot this year because I was letting the rifle recoil back and not putting pressure on the tang of the stock with my thumb like I had in the past. There a lot like a women, you have to hold them right.

Joe, Was that really all that was? I bet you were kickin' yourself when you figured that out!

My guess would still be wind. Sure, it could be any number of things, but unless you had a whole bunch of flags out to show slight changes, you really have no way of knowing that it isn't. That's what makes shooting with flags so important, whether it be in a match, practice or load development. If the shot goes out with a switch in the flags, you know where it came from, but without flags, you're truly left chasing your tail often.

Your hold could be degrading or loosening up. Every time you cycle your bolt you need to be right back on the same way. If your hold isn't repeatable for the whole group then you could be laying your cheek or rolling your body to the right towards the end of the group. Mixed brass could be the issue as well as you could have some inconsistent release by the neck.

Walt yes I think that's all it was, I was trying the best I could to let the gun free recoil. But I think all I did was screw myself. So Raptor Try and hold the rifle the best way you can and watch the wind. Last match, I was in the first relay and we all were thinking no wind this is great. Boy were we all wrong! We all shot like two min. right. And my last sighter shot was in the ten ring. Go figure.

Thanks for the replies Guys!! I appreciate all the input!! It gives me some things to think about and try. It could be wind but it was actually blowing in the opposite way the bullet was going but then I could be missing a lull too. Thanks again!!

If it is more than what is accountable to wind then my guess would be cheek pressure.

I agree with this. Wind at 600 can really push a bullet around. Especially a let off or switch. Matt

after recoil is the gun on target or is it off to the left? Common for right handed shooters to end up on the left side of the target because cheeking the buttstock (applying side pressure with the head) causes it to move away from your face under recoil (muzzle ends up going left along with the shot)

I agree with Dusty,,,,most verticle is caused by a load that is too mild,,,and most horizontal is caused by wind,,,,at 600 yds the same wind that moves a bullet 1/4" at 100yds will move it 8",,,,32 times as much,,!!!!!and OBTW a let up will move the bullet as much as a push,,,just the other way ,hahah,,,believ me "I KNOW",,hahah,,,,,,it is hilarious when somone ponders "how that happened" and a keyboad shooter says "try anonther primer" or some other hi tec but no result cure,,,,there is no substitute for trigger time,,,,Roger

As a quote from our original DRT (Designated Rifleman Team) basic manual. For a right handed shooter, the shots will always go left if any of the following fundamentals of trigger manage management are not followed. [The reverse will apply for left handed shooters] And I quote" Proper trigger management is the application of the trigger finger placed somewhere on the trigger that is comfortable and repeatable. The trigger MUST be pulled in a smooth and deliberate manner directly to the rear until the shot breaks." end quote. What you are doing is adding lateral pull to the trigger, thus moving the muzzle to the left. Now before any of you starting on me about breathing and breath control, remember, the OP ask about a consistent left flier, not proper breath control.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd
ps: If this makes it clear as mud, PM me and I will physically walk you through a exercise on your speaker phone that should clear it up.
