WHAT CALIBER FOR A 20" BARREL ?????

What caliber would get me the highest velocity for medium pressure and medium weight vld bullets? A 6.5 Creedmoor, a 7-08 Rem, or a 308 Win. Will be target shooting with some hunting in this rifle. Weight of the rifle should be at 7lbs, and will be using a suppressor. The 20" barrel is because of the use of a suppressor.

Will be ordering a barrel this next Monday and putting the rifle together next weekend.

The. Most velocity will be had with the lightest bullet weight .
I think I would look at 6+ 45

The Creedmoor will give the highest velocity. Whether the 6.5 is enough for your hunting is up to you, lots of great bullets though. The 7-08 with 162s is in a pretty sweet spot of potency, efficiency, and inherent accuracy. 20" .308 won't give up much to a 24".

Prime 130 grain 6.5 Creedmoor gives me an average of 2715 with a Magnetospeed with a 20" barrel on a Tikka CTR. But it is nowhere near a weight of
7 lbs. I also went with the 20" barrel for suppressor use.

What are the expected velocities with each round and a given bullet?
1. 6.5 Creedmoor Lapua brass and a Berger 140 vld.
2. 6.5-47 Lapua and a Berger 140 vld
3. 7-08 with Lapua brass and a Berger 168 classic hunter
4. 308 Win with Lapua Palma brass and Berger 175 vld

For a 20" barrel, if you wanted to find an optimized cart, the 6.8spc case is very close to what you want for that length. Necked down to 6.5 or 6 and you have a wicked little light weight rifle with a bit better ballistics than the .277 bullets. The .420" bolt face is usually the issue, either machining a fixed bolt up from .378, or buying a ptg savage bolt head. There is very little gain per inch past 20" with that case size as the 6.8 was developed for 14" barrels originally.

Energy at the animal is going to be close, the 6.5s will carry increasingly more energy (which isn't what matters) as the range increases.

OP, ask yourself how far you want to hunt; find out which projectile / cartridge combo will sustain 1800 fps (which is a better indicator of bullet performance) to the distance you want to hunt. Ask yourself how important close range potency is to you; how important is factory ammo; how cold is it where you hunt; and any other questions near and dear to you.

Answer those questions and you'll probably know which cartridge you want.

Going with a 6.5 Creedmoor. Picked up a box of Lapua small rifle primer brass a couple of days ago. Thinking a 20" barrel length. Will I loose a bunch of velocity from a 24" barrel?
My barrel is a Bartlien 5r 1-8.5 twist. A Curtis custom action.
I planning on using my suppressor on this rifle.

This is a 20" Bartlein barrel being used for both suppressed and a muzzle brake. Tested with LE ammunition and 140 gr. bullets, the velocities ran right around 2750 -2785 fps. Switching to 130 grain bullets netted about 2850 fps. These velocities will get you to approximately 700 yards with 1,000 ft/lbs. of remaining energy.

I have a 6.5X47 lapua, and a 284 win in 15 inch barrels... switch barrel XP100 build.

Any non magnum cartridge works..

7mm08 is good, 308, 260, creedmoore, 6BR, 6.5X47, 6x47, 6x45, 6.5 Grendel, 6XC, the list goes on. They all do fine in 15-20 inches

LE ammunition?

Law Enforcement. Many (all that I'm aware of) departments have restrictions as to what type of ammunition they can use for duty. NO reloads, has to be factory in all situations I'm aware of. Some types of LE ammunition are measured by the medium they are required to penetrate, such as windshields (angle of deflection), car bodies, engine blocks, etc.

Regards.

Had the barrel chambered over the weekend. Went with a 22" barrel Finnish length with keeping the full breech end. Figured can cut it back if wanted but could never add barrel length if wanted.

Will start barrel seasoning this week and work up loads next week.
