what calb. ?

I am looking in to getting a rem 700 sps for hunting deer and hogs. I have some questions. Would you get the blue steel barrel or the SS barrel ? I would like to shoot some little groups up to 200m. I shoot a xp100 15" barrel 6mm br and it shoots 1" groups at 200m. I would hate to get a rifle that would not come close to that. My choices are. All of these guns have a 24" barrel. I will be reloading for the gun.

7-08 w/ 1-9 1/4" twist
308 w/ 1-10 twist
243 win. w/ 1-10 twist

These are factory barrels. I did not want to get in to putting a custom barrel on it because cost to need does not add up. My first pick for 5 yrs has been 308. Then i thought the 7-08 might be more accret . I use to have a 243 win. and it shoot real good. There two choices, blue ou ss barrel , then calb. What is your choice ? thanks Charles

As far as caliber goes, the 7mm-08 or .308 should do well. The .243 is light for hogs of any size. It will work but is not optimal IMO. I prefer the ss barrels/actions for hunting because they require less care to protect against rust.

+1 to what eric says,I have a sporter7-08 and it is a hammer ,beside's it shoots around.7 moa at 100 yds and is a stock salvage. It has a couple tricks but nothing out of the ordinary.

I was thinking the 7-08 would be more accurate all thow the 308 is a heack of a rd. I was also thinking of the SS for it's up keep. I think i will want to camo it some way as the sun start to rise the only think you can see in the woods is that bright shiny thing laying across your lap as you sit there watching for that big buck to walk out. Been there done that, got home and grabed the spray paint. The factory rem barrel has a 1-9 1/4 twist barrel. They say 120gr-140gr bullet. Nosler makes accro bond and a hunter bt in 140 gr. What bullet would you use for the best hunting and most accurate ? Thanks Charles

New thought. I have custom die set and 3-500 rds of 7mm br brass i shoot in a xp100 pistol. If i were to have a custom 7mm br barrel put on a 700 SA, would that make a very good hunting cal. ? I know i can buy 7-08 dies and brass a lot cheeper than a custom barrel. What is your thoughts ?

I also used a 7 br xp 100 for years to harvest a number of deer, I had a 700 so chambered and It shot well , but only shot one antelope with it. I was using 140 gr. Nos. bts and they did perform wellout of both guns. Never chronied rifle but think 2450- 2500 fps possible with a 140 . The barrel on the rifle was a shilen and a copper mine so I got tired of it. But otherwise it shot decent.
