Uugh what a long & drained 2 days.
Saturday a pal & I went through close to 700 rounds into p-dogs on one of the ranches I call coyote on.
Rolling hills and we shot them in 3 towns. All shooting was prone & just above them on rises we could find, shoot until they just decide not to pop up & we don't wait an hour for them, move to another spot & do over.
Ranges from 50 yards to me shooting just under 600 w/my suppressed Savage .223 & 50g vmax load and him past 700 on a few w/his 243AI. His 243 AI, 58g vmax at 3900+ fps just literally disintegrates them, more so than his .220 swift, 55g vmax load.
Nice that we can go anyplace on the ranches property in my truck to get at them. No creeks for me to drop the gun into in this area....darn! I was using my barrel wrap and keeping it wet for heat control. Mirage was nothing to cry about Saturday even with the sun out and in the low 70s.
Im sure a few coyote hit it Saturday eve for easy eating and away from the newborns for a night.
Sunday (today) my 1st shot was at 645am and fairly consistent to 1pm when we called it quits as the winds were just not wanting to let up, was up to 23mph as we left. Started off nice and under 5mph till about 1130am. Nice & sunny and mid 60s today. This was at a different spot from Saturday at yet another ranch I call coyotes on as well.
Both days we did not see any young ones, lots of nice big fat adults. Again laying prone on our mats on rises since this ranch is also rolling hills/valleys w/tall grasses. Again we would shoot until they were none left to shoot & moved (walked) 600+ yards or so to another un-shot spot. We fought grasshoppers all day as well, they are out like the plague & thick. Try shooing and looking in your scope and its all buggered out w/one in the objective...ha!
Dang things were all over us after it warmed up. I ran 279 rounds in my .223, not sure of his count today, about the same I think. I set my pal up about 100 yards from me into a different direction from my shooting as I hate the 243ai howitzer boom even w/my ear protection in. Again me shooting suppressed.
Laying prone w/the stiff winds was rough due to dust being a constant after 11am and I think I used more water for my face/eyes than drinking.
That is all until next weekend.
