Watch your Credit Cards

As mentioned set up the alerts on all your cards for a $$ amount, card not present and international charges. The alerts are a pain in the A** but they can save you time waiting for a new card and money trying to dispute a charge. A few years back I had someone try and purchase a Apple product in CA. to the tune of $1200. I was able to call the store and inform them of the bogus charge. The manager called me a couple of days later and offered me a $100 credit for any future purchase at Apple nation wide.

Years ago they got my CC # somehow and check into a 2,000 sq ft suite at the Marriot and racked up a ton of room service including two fully stocked mini bars, plus over $1,500 in to main bar. When I disputed the charges they said "no, you signed the receipt" To which I replied that I was nowhere near that hotel, over 300 miles away. "Oh, we will send you a new card". I thought I was going to have to pay the ~$5,000+ tab and said I don't want another card.

We are headed towards a cashless economy. Years ago business's quit accepting checks because they were getting too many hot checks. Now everybody's in on it it seems. Credit cards can be at risk anytime we purchase on line. It's a write off for the card companies so not much gets done. It's a perplexing situation with no good answers.

Lots of places don't like cash because it's easy for the employees to steal.

Today marked the 2nd time in 2 weeks that I have had bogus charges on my cards.
Make sure you check daily and only use a TRUSTED site and vendor.
It's a pain calling the card company and answering their questions, I know it's needed to be done.
And the wait for the new card.
Remember be safe and watch your back. Bad guys are everywhere.
And the worst part about this they very rarely catch them.
Good reminder. Its true the CC companies dont try to catch these thieves. Its just a cost of doing business to them. One side of it is my late dad and I got accused by USAA of being fraudsters and they treated us terribly. Straitened that out and Never to deal with that company again, so these companies dont want to accuse people and alienate them if they are wrong. I watch my statements closely and I do need to use cash more.
i got fraudulent charges on a card once and went through the getting a new card thing and the very next month got more. At first i wondered how that happened but figured out the thieves got the info from a retailer i let keep my card on file.

Some one tried to use my VISA credit card issued by my Credit Union at a Best Buy in CA on 8 Sep, I live in AL. This morning, I woke up to an email and a text inquiries from my credit union security company, and before I could react to those messages, I received a phone call from that entity at 0830!! Card is CANX.

Wallets and pocketbooks need to be shielded, watch who is around when you fuel up, scanners are easy to get. Don't answer unrecognized phone numbers, or respond to unsolicited calls. Block phone numbers to your cell phones you don't know, your information is stored everywhere.

Long story short.... about 30 years ago my wife's brother owned a hardware store and had someone come in wanting to purchase a mower. He tried using a CC which belonged to my wife's boss(who my brother in law knew). That's one thief that was caught.

I had both the cards that I use frequently compromised about a month ago. Fortunately a week apart so I got one replaced just in time to cancel the other one. I think a gun-related seller that we use probably got hacked. I had obviously used both cards there.

I don’t think CC companies lose money on bad charges. Ask Larry Scott who loses the money. You don’t have to pay for fraud and the CC company holds the merchants money long enough to hear from you.

I have stopped using credit cards for gas in anything other than large chains like WaWa I have not had a problem.
In smaller stations I use cash.

About a month ago, I noticed a charge for $3 listed as "Amazon Prime" - I watched it, then a few days later one for $70 popped up. Seems they tried the $3 to see if it was legit. CC company credited them immediately canceled the number and sent a new card. I set my notification parameters to send me an email for every transaction so I can verify it immediately.

For online transactions - If your institution supports it - use a virtual credit card. Once a merchant charges the card - it's no longer valid for one time use virtual numbers. Some have recurring virtual cards for recurring monthly charges. Helps reduce your exposure to your real card (since you are not using your real card online).

example:

For my physical card, - you can lock your card (if it's supported). Non-recurring charges to your card/account will fail. Using the app on my phone - unlock the card just prior to you using it at a physical merchant - lock the card/account once the transaction is completed.

With an average 3% these companies collect on credit card transactions the "cost" for that "write off" practice is passed onto all the businesses that have to accept credit cards to be able to do business at all.

So that "cost" gets passed on to all of us as customers who do business with them, whether we pay cash or not.
