I think they are after the Porsche Cayenne market. Ford doesn't have any pedgree for making performance SUV's, so they seem to be borrowing off the "Mustang" name.
I guess that qualifies as Ford's "weird sense of humor."
No it just proves that Ford’s employ’s have no imagination when comes to naming their cars. Remember when they dug up the old 500 name from the discontinued Galaxy, then renamed it the Taurus. I am waiting for the next Pinto, Maverick, or Torino.
