Warning -- Do NOT Attack Other People's Classifieds

Forum Boss

Administrator
The Classifieds Area is NOT a discussion forum to debate pricing.

REPEAT

The Classifieds Area is NOT a discussion forum.

If you are NOT a potential buyer and do NOT have some specific factual question about the product, then DO NOT post in a classified thread.

This is not the place to discuss the price of tea in China or dump on someone's ad because you think the asking price is too high or there is a better alternate product made/sold/invented by someone else.

If we find people "slamming" other members' ad(s), the person making the improper comment will receive a temporary loss of posting privilege.

We are serious about this, and about people abusing the BTT thing in the classifieds. We are considering shutting off the classifieds for a week so that people get the message...

Amen , Forum Boss. The classifieds are to post sales , not to voice opinions. People are asking to sell something. If someone feels the price is gouged or inflated or unreasonable then just move on. If it is indeed over inflated then it will not sell and the seller will be the loser. If someone buys it at a high price ,then it must not have been too high............
Just my opinion.............. :)

Thank you Sir for keeping this a clean and professional forum. You should not need to patrol and delete irrational posts. Possibly you need to swear in some sheriffs here ;)

I'm curious about the BTT also? I haven't done it for friends on here but, I have done it for myself many times! Is that out of the ordinary?

Thanks,
Mike

Paul,
I think this should be posted in the classifieds for people that only read the classifieds. Otherwise they may not see this.

All,
This may be what Paul is referring to with the BTT: When someone posts something for sale, everyone reads it because it is new. If someone adds a question, it is flagged as unread (new) and everyone reads it again. If the OP changes the price, it is flagged as unread and everyone reads it again. If the post has several items and any one of them gets SFP, it gets updated and again flagged as unread so everyone reads it again. When someone does a BTT or Bump when nothing is actually changed, it's just not necessary. There are enough natural ways for a BTT to happen and it can get aggravating to re-read the same thing you were not interested in purchasing the first time over and over again when nothing changed. Not to mention the additional work the software and servers have to do keeping up with all the threads in all the listings for each and every user that they have or have not read.

Agree if price is too high don't buy it. Same as in a store.

I do have a quick ? Are 3rd party sales allowed on the site? Did not see it in the rules if it IS or IS NOT allowed

Wayne,
Just giving my interpretation of why the boss may have an issue with them. When some posts something like "this is a great guy and good to deal with" that's a bump. Also asking for more details is an automatic bump. Adds that are priced too high and won't sell but have many BTT to keep them alive are the problem. If the add has been read 300+ times and no one is interested, that should tell the OP to make it more appealing or give up and let it go to the big archive is the sky.

I always choose "show unread posts since last visit" so I see all of them on busy days.

No arguments here buddy, just my opinion. Thanks for listening.

what is wrong with a friendly bump, for a good friend/member or what's wrong with doing it yourself, for newbies or non contributors block them from doing it, Paul could easily do that.

What is wrong with a friendly bump?

The problem is when it becomes SOP, and everybody starts posting BTT over and over again to push their ad up to the detriment of others. It becomes an escalating game.

Block them from doing that... Paul could easily do that?

Actually, it is very, very difficult to keep this under control. We have no magic "filter" to block "BTT" or "Bump" posts. We have no simple way to impose one set of posting rules for long-term membies vs. newbies or non-contributors. This is one issue we are struggling with right now....

Posting of multiple items seems to cause alot of this problem because sellers do not change listing subject matter when some item is sold. I am new here, just an observation over the past two weeks. thanks, john

well I enjoy this site much better than "the others" but one of those sites implements a very strict rule of waiting x amount of hours before bumping and also can't have more than 2 posts on one page of the for sale forum. Maybe this would help from people bumping every 30 minutes and having 4-5 listings per page..........

Like mentioned above a few posts back another one of the sites you must be a paid member to have access to the classifieds section.

Just a few thoughts that would definitely help

I think we should all just laugh at the whole thing... I mean it's really kind of funny to watch.

BRAND XXX (never heard of)
AR-15 stripped lower reciever
$2000 plus $100 shipping

BTT
BTT
BTT
BTT

I mean it looks ridiculous. People here are aren't panic buyers...

I think it's just funny...

Do you want to fix this???

Do what Sniper Hide does... Make it where you can't post a classified until you have a 100 posts....

We don't have tools to enforce "time-outs" on BTTs, but that's a good idea.

Can you provide more details via PM to "Forum Boss". Thanks in advance...

FYI, we are looking at a Classifieds module that would auto-expire ads and basically control everything more tightly. The problem is that we had to keep things super-super-super simple for most members. Any system that offers more sophisticated controls is also going to make the posting process a bit more complicated.
